Background / History

Hokage succession and capture

Before Minato becomes the Fourth Hokage, Orochimaru’s reputation deteriorates while Minato’s improves. At the inauguration, Orochimaru exchanges a cold glance with Chentian, looks toward Minato, and quietly leaves. Chentian expects him to defect but initially lacks the strength to intervene 6 11.

ANBU later discover his human-experimentation base. Inside, the capture team finds people suspended in formalin and corpses on operating tables. Orochimaru largely ignores the intruders and addresses Hiruzen, his teacher 19.

Minato and Kushina overpower him. Hiruzen attempts to kill Orochimaru before he can be captured alive, protecting himself from exposure over the research on Hashirama’s cells. Chentian threatens Hiruzen with a Tailed Beast Bomb, giving Kushina time to restrain Orochimaru and seal his chakra 19 20.

Remaining in Konoha

Instead of conducting a conventional interrogation, Minato and Kushina privately speak with Orochimaru for three hours using an approach prepared by Chentian. Kushina then removes his seals, and he leaves peacefully. His release is concealed: Minato tells others that Orochimaru remains imprisoned under ANBU guard 20 21.

Danzo, who deliberately leaked information about the experiments, sends Root operatives to retrieve or kill Orochimaru before his own crimes can be exposed. Orochimaru joins Chentian and Kushina in ambushing the infiltrators, then collects their bodies for a public display crediting Minato with protecting Konoha. He remains a Konoha Sannin rather than becoming a missing-nin 21.

Chentian promises him 100 million ryo for a replacement laboratory and introduces him to science by offering a supposed path to immortality. Orochimaru builds a modern laboratory near the Hokage Building and studies Chentian’s handwritten physics and chemistry textbooks. Nohara Rin becomes his assistant 22 23.

Konoha’s development and defense

Orochimaru’s research produces practical technology, including a game console. He later agrees to develop cameras and video-editing software within a month, supplying equipment for Chentian’s entertainment-based effort to improve the Uchiha clan’s public image 23 59 67.

He also remains an active defender of Konoha. Alongside the other Sannin and Chentian, he guards Kushina’s delivery, helps maintain the continuous assault against Obito, and joins the effort to hold back the escaped Nine-Tails 46 48 49.

During Konoha’s attack on the Hidden Cloud, Orochimaru summons Manda and permits him to eat enemy ninja as sacrifices. Manda is immediately overwhelmed by massed ninjutsu. Afterward, Orochimaru contributes suggestions to an overnight discussion of the Uchiha clan’s exclusion, then returns to his laboratory upon reaching Konoha 56 57 58.

He is assigned to Jiraiya’s ninjutsu division while being allowed to conduct research at Chentian’s estate. His interests include Devil Fruits and Haki; he eventually captures several Zoan users belonging to the Beasts Pirates for study 208 266.

Conflict with the Emperors and Marines

While guarding the crew’s outer territories, Orochimaru responds to an attack and kills pirates looting an island where Myriad Worlds crew members have fallen.
