Taylor understood his teacher Krite's "hint" perfectly. It was nothing more than making one last sweep and grabbing whatever they could before leaving, after which this place would be taken over by the White Tower Alliance.
He had been poor for so long that he was terrified of poverty. Now, all he cared about was money and resources.
Even if Krite had said nothing, he would have gone and made a sweep himself.
