Background / History

Sasuke begins as a member of Team 7 alongside Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno. He initially treats Naruto with open disdain, but the team's first major mission forces him to confront opponents far beyond genin level. Zabuza Momochi's killing intent leaves him trembling despite his Sharingan, exposing both his inexperience and fear of death. 4 8

On the Land of Waves bridge, Sasuke protects Tazuna and Sakura, then evolves his Sharingan to two tomoe while fighting Haku. His new perception lets him briefly pressure Haku, but Zabuza's killing intent immobilizes him immediately afterward. Ling Yue takes Zabuza's blade to save him; Sasuke responds with furious resolve and later thanks her for protecting him. 15 16 19

During the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru identifies Sasuke's Sharingan and bloodline as ideal for a vessel, then plants the Cursed Seal of Heaven on him. The seal repeatedly erodes Sasuke's judgment and drives him toward violent power. Sasuke is proud, competitive, and intensely unwilling to be surpassed. His early hostility toward Naruto reflects that pride, while his reaction to Naruto's Nine-Tails power reveals a deeper fear of falling behind and being unable to avenge those he lost. 4 15

He is capable of protecting others even before he fully acknowledges those bonds. He shields Tazuna and Sakura from Haku, carries Sakura while escaping the Forest of Death, and responds with genuine anger when Ling Yue is wounded saving him.
