Background & History

Founding and early development

Konoha was founded by Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha to end the Warring States era and protect later generations. The village expanded by absorbing smaller surrounding clans, becoming powerful enough to inspire the nations of Wind, Water, Earth, and Lightning to establish shinobi villages of their own. 1

Madara once subdued Iwagakure alone, producing a period of peace. He later left Konoha and was reportedly slain by Hashirama at the Valley of the End. 1 Madara also coined the village's name as a testament to his friendship with Hashirama. 7 26

After Madara's departure, Mito Uzumaki became the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki and Konoha's leadership reorganized the Uchiha Clan. 1 Under the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, the village established the ANBU, Ninja Academy, and Police Force. 1

First Shinobi World War

Hashirama's death removed the force that had maintained the ninja world's fragile peace. Iwagakure and Takigakure attacked Kumogakure, Sunagakure invaded the Land of Rain, and Kirigakure allied with Kumogakure while declaring war on the Land of Whirlpools. As an ally of both the Land of Rain and the Land of Whirlpools, Konoha entered conflicts on multiple fronts. 18

Under Tobirama, Konoha deployed eight hundred elites to the Land of Rain and defeated Sunagakure through a decapitation operation against the Kazekage's forces. The conflict ended with Sunagakure's surrender and a treaty dictated by Konoha. 20 21 23 25

Konoha later concentrated on destroying the four thousand Kirigakure troops stationed in the Land of Whirlpools before aiding Iwagakure. After the Battle of Sea Cliff and the defeat of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, Konoha and Kirigakure agreed to a ceasefire. 33 35 36

Following the ceasefire, Tobirama moved two thousand Konoha elites to threaten the Land of Lightning's border, forcing the Second Raikage to withdraw forces from the Land of Waterfalls. 36

Relations with the Land of Fire

Konoha is nominally subordinate to the Land of Fire's daimyō, but Tobirama rejects outside manipulation of village affairs. After the daimyō's assassination, he intervened directly in the succession crisis, supported the new daimyō, and stripped absent noble clans of their names, land, and population shares. 26 29

Danzo was temporarily stationed in the capital to stabilize the new regime and redistribute noble interests, but Tobirama ordered him recalled after judging his growing political influence to be dangerous. 29 36

Uchiha Clan tensions

The Uchiha Clan remains a major internal concern. Following Madara's death, it became a high-risk group under village surveillance, and Tobirama repeatedly expressed distrust of the clan. 1 2

Tobirama nearly exterminated the Uchiha after Uchiha Hui's actions were interpreted as a threat, but Hashirama prevented the purge. 4 Despite this hostility, Tobirama recognizes Madara's contributions to Konoha and views Uchiha Linhai as a possible future “towering tree” for the village. 26 37

Hashirama established an iron rule prohibiting shinobi below jōnin rank from participating in large-scale wars involving more than one hundred people. The policy protects younger shinobi from the extreme casualty rates of mass warfare and preserves Konoha's future manpower. 36

Konoha's battlefield forces are consequently smaller than those of rival villages but consist largely of veterans who fought alongside the First and Second Hokage since the Warring States era. 36
