Ino Yamanaka was in a bad mood today.
The reason was Sakura Haruno. The two had been friends since childhood, playing house together, picking flowers together, and braiding each other's hair. But ever since Sakura saw Sasuke Uchiha on the first day of school, their little boat of friendship had started leaking. During today's taijutsu class, Sakura's eyes had been glued to Sasuke the entire time. Ino spoke to her three times, and Sakura did not hear a single word—not that she had failed to hear her. She had selectively filtered her out, because the third time, Ino had leaned right next to her ear, and Sakura had not even turned her head. Ino was furious, and the consequences were severe. She decided that after school today, she would not walk home with Sakura. Let her go wait for that Uchiha young master who would not even spare her a glance.
So, after taijutsu class ended, Ino did not drag Sakura to browse the ninja tool shop as usual. Instead, she ran alone to the small hill behind the training grounds for some air. This was her favorite secret base at the Ninja Academy—a crooked cherry tree. Its canopy was not large, but it was just enough to block the sun overhead, and the angle of its trunk was perfect for half-reclining against it. After climbing up, she tossed her backpack aside, rested both hands behind her head, and prepared to sulk properly for a while.
Then she saw Senju Shinichi.
After leaving the training grounds, Shinichi went to the faucet to wash his face. From Ino's high vantage point, she could see the entire training ground at a glance. She had not meant to spy on him—not that she was spying. She had merely happened to see him. Shinichi straightened after washing his face, and sunlight happened to fall across his profile. Droplets rolled down from his chin, and standing there beneath the sun, he looked like a little pine tree that had just been drenched by rain.
Until now, Ino's impression of Shinichi had been limited to "that Senju kid who sparred with Sasuke." During their match, she had stood beside Sakura. Sakura had called out Sasuke's name the whole time, while Ino had watched Shinichi a few times. His movements were clean and decisive, and his reactions were quick, but compared to Sasuke, he did not seem as aggressive. Now, watching him stand alone by the faucet from afar, without classmates watching him or a cheering crowd of friends and family around him, he seemed to have more presence than he had on the field. How should she put it? There was a certainty about him, as though he did not need anyone else to prove anything for him. It made Ino, sulking on the hill, watch him a little longer without realizing it.
Then she sensed a fluctuation of chakra.
She had not actively sensed it; it had been passively triggered. As the heir of the Yamanaka Clan, Ino had received basic training in mental perception from a young age. Though she had not yet formally learned the Mind Body Switch Technique, her sensitivity to chakra was already among the best of her peers. She could read a great deal from another person's chakra fluctuations—emotion, stamina, degree of concentration, and occasionally even their current state of mind. Her father, Inoichi, had said that such talent was rare even within the Yamanaka Clan, and told her to treasure it. But this gift had a flaw—it was too sensitive. Sometimes, things she did not want to sense would pour into her awareness on their own.
That was what was happening now. A vast vitality radiated from Shinichi's direction. Even from dozens of meters away, it filled her entire sensory field.
Ino abruptly sat upright, nearly falling from the tree.
If chakra was water, then an ordinary person's chakra was a basin of wash water. A ninja's chakra was a river, and a jonin's chakra was a mighty current. Senju Shinichi's chakra was neither a basin, nor a river, nor a great current—it was a hot spring. It did not win through sheer volume. It was the kind that continuously welled outward, warm and full of life, making one feel cozy all over just by drawing near. It felt much like lying in the yard beneath the sun, except sunlight shone in from outside, while this warmth radiated directly from within.
She also noticed something even more unusual within that chakra. Ordinary chakra had a single nature, two at most. But Shinichi's chakra seemed to contain at least several different layers of sensation—a cool, wispy feeling like wind, the damp scent of earth, and another layer she could not describe at all. It was not a nature transformation. It was more like a nourishing effect; simply being near it made her breathing inexplicably smoother.
Ino swallowed. She had heard her father discuss certain unusual chakra traits during perception training. Back then, she had thought those descriptions were too mystical—things like "the scent rising from the earth after the first rain of spring." She had thought her father was stuffing ancient poetry into the lesson materials. But now, she truly felt it. This was the kind of chakra her father had described, chakra carrying the warmth of life.
"Ino?" A boy's voice came from beneath the tree.
Ino looked down and saw Shinichi holding a towel, standing beneath the crooked cherry tree and looking up at her. She had moved too suddenly when she sat up, and her backpack had slipped from the branch, landing right by his feet.
"Is this yours?"
"It is!" Ino hurriedly jumped down from the tree. Her ponytail swung high as she landed, the tips of her hair brushing through the air before Shinichi. She bent to pick up her backpack, brushed off the bits of grass and petals, and quickly switched from embarrassment to her usual lively manner. "Thanks! How did you know I was up there?"
"Your backpack fell." Shinichi pointed at the ground. "Otherwise, I wouldn't have noticed."
Ino hugged her backpack and gave him a couple of appraising looks. At this close distance, that sense of vitality was even stronger. She could even feel her palms growing faintly warm. It was not an illusion. She had confirmed it using the Yamanaka Clan's sensing methods—when she focused her attention on Shinichi, an extremely subtle chakra resonance truly came from her palms.
"You obviously didn't go all out when you sparred with Sasuke earlier." She tilted her head, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, her tone turning more inquisitive.
Shinichi looked at her without answering immediately. He lowered his head, unscrewed his water bottle, and took a drink. Then he said in an utterly calm tone, "Taijutsu class isn't the Chunin Exams."
That answer neither admitted nor denied anything, but Ino caught the implication—he really had not used his full strength. She wanted to press further, but felt that probing too deeply during their first proper conversation would be inappropriate. So she switched to a more analytical tone. "Hey, is your chakra different from everyone else's? How should I put it? It's like—when you pay even a little attention to it, your entire palm starts feeling warm." As she spoke, she raised her index finger and pointed through the air toward his shoulder.
"Maybe it's because of the Senju bloodline." Shinichi spoke openly while appropriately reducing the amount of information he revealed. "I don't really feel anything. I'm used to it."
Ino turned those words over in her mind. The Senju bloodline—she did not know much about the Senju Clan. She only knew that the First Hokage was Hashirama Senju, and that Lady Tsunade was also from the Senju Clan. But her father had told her that the Senju Clan's chakra naturally possessed powerful vitality, and that it had been one of Konoha's foundations when the village was established. Those historical stories had once felt very distant to her. But now, a living Senju descendant stood before her, his chakra more tangible than anything written in a history book, and her innate curiosity about exceptional genes began to surface.
"Then do you want to come play at my house?" Ino blurted out. She froze for a moment after saying it herself. She had not planned to invite him, but now that the words were out, she could not take them back, so she hurriedly added, "My dad is the head of the Yamanaka Clan. He said before that he really wanted to meet a descendant of the Senju Clan—not for an interview! Just for tea and conversation!"
Shinichi fell silent for a moment. He quickly sorted through several points in his mind: Inoichi Yamanaka, a core member of the Konoha Intelligence Division and the Allied Shinobi Forces' chief intelligence commander during the Great Ninja War. Establishing a connection with Inoichi would make obtaining intelligence resources much smoother in the future. More importantly, Ino herself possessed the strongest mental perception abilities among the Konoha Twelve. In future battles against Sharingan genjutsu or other mental threats, her abilities would be irreplaceable.
"Sure," he said. "If I'm free this weekend."
Ino's fingers tightened around her backpack, as though she were cheering Yes! inside, but she kept her expression at the composed level expected of a major clan's heir—which was to say, the corners of her lips rose by three millimeters. She tilted her head and looked at Shinichi's profile, becoming more certain that there was much more to him that she had yet to sense. And there was no rush. He was coming to her house this weekend, after all. She could take the opportunity to use her sensory abilities to thoroughly analyze every aspect of his chakra nature—purely out of academic interest, of course. She nodded to herself, and the blond hair behind her ears swayed twice.
