Background

Naruto grew up alone in an apartment at Konoha's eastern edge rather than in the orphanage, an exception made because he was the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki. Villagers avoided him, leaving him to subsist on instant noodles and expired milk in an otherwise empty home. 2 10

Two weeks before Ninja Academy enrollment, Shinichi found Naruto hungry and isolated behind a fruit stall. Shinichi bought him dumplings and ramen, recognized that Naruto needed companionship rather than pity, and became his first close friend. 11 12 72
