Ch. 101Parting in the Rain
Key plot points and events
- Xuanhui and Jiraiya leave the Rain village, where they have been living with Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato.
- Before departing, Xuanhui gives each child a gift and advice suited to their role: Yahiko receives paired papers for instant long-distance messages; Konan gets papermaking techniques; Nagato receives a jade charm meant to help him stay calm.
- Jiraiya reassures the children that they will always be his students. The two men leave through the Wooden Door, and the three children return to a suddenly empty home.
- Back in Konoha, Jiraiya reunites with Orochimaru and Xuanhui at Orochimaru’s laboratory. Orochimaru and Xuanhui have developed a small chakra-producing sample from Eight-Tails cells, but humans cannot directly absorb its special chakra. They are exploring its potential as a chakra battery.
- The group visits Tsunade and Dan Katō at the hospital. They discuss Dan’s work and the successful expansion of medical-ninja training at the Ninja Academy, whose first new graduates are ready for practical service. Orochimaru proposes that they go see the Third Hokage.
Character developments and interactions
- Xuanhui’s affection for the three children is clear in his thoughtful gifts and personal guidance. He urges Yahiko to lead wisely, Konan to notice what others miss, and Nagato to remain composed and protect others.
- Yahiko accepts the responsibility of leadership; Konan responds warmly by giving Xuanhui a paper flower; Nagato shows growing resolve and promises to follow Xuanhui’s advice.
- Jiraiya gives the children a heartfelt farewell and returns to Konoha. His easy laughter around Tsunade and Dan suggests he has accepted that life may include personal regrets.
- Orochimaru shows initiative by suggesting a reunion with old companions and continues his scientific collaboration with Xuanhui.
- Tsunade and Dan appear more settled and less burdened, sharing lighthearted affection while pursuing reforms together.
