Background
Samwell was born the eldest son of Lord Randyll Tarly of Horn Hill. He inherited the Tarly dark hair, gray eyes, and tall stature, but was severely obese and considered cowardly and unfit for martial life. After arriving in Westeros three months earlier, he attempted to improve through dieting, riding, and sword training, but a suspected sabotage of his saddle left him bedridden and convinced him that fighting Dickon's supporters for Horn Hill would be dangerous. 1
Rather than be forced into the Night's Watch, Samwell voluntarily renounced his inheritance and sought a settlement decree. He accepted humiliation during his investiture because the right to establish a new domain mattered more than pride, then took the new family name Caesar. 1 2
Randyll rejected him as Horn Hill's heir but still gave him gold for his departure and personally executed James, the riding instructor believed to have arranged Samwell's accident. Their relationship remained harsh, though Randyll urged him to remember House Tarly's words: “First in Battle.” 3
Appearance
Samwell initially appears as a tall but extremely fat young man whose bloated face lacks the stern, rugged presence associated with House Tarly. His formal clothing is tight enough to restrict his breathing. 1
- Dark hair and gray eyes inherited from House Tarly. 1
- Initially obese and physically clumsy, particularly in sword training and riding. 1 3
- Becomes visibly less bloated after sustained training and can eventually complete his soldiers' full training regimen. 8
- Later develops tougher skin, stronger teeth, a more powerful heartbeat, and a markedly increased appetite as his attributes surpass ten. 277
- Frequently carries the white greatsword Dawn and wears House Royce's ancient bronze Time Armor. 184 522
Personality
Samwell is pragmatic, observant, and willing to endure humiliation for a tangible advantage. He accepts Tyrell support while recognizing Olenna and Margaery's political motives, using their underestimate of him as an advantage rather than allowing himself to become their puppet. 2 5 6
He is an ambitious organizer and strategist. He applies knowledge from his former life, military theory, and experience managing employees to train dockworkers into disciplined recruits, later using diplomacy, economic pressure, military reform, and new weapons to expand his influence. 7 228 231
As his power grows, Samwell becomes increasingly ruthless. He is willing to deceive enemies, arrange killings, exploit rival houses, and consider eliminating political threats, yet remains protective of those he considers family or loyal followers. His concern over Dickon's resurrection reflects his refusal to accept divine manipulation as the price of power. 152 227 259 275 307

- Its supernatural heat later fades, leaving the blade in its original milky-white form. 293
Spirit Conversion
Samwell's Spirit attribute can temporarily become another attribute.
- First manifests during a spar with Syrio Forel, converting into Agility and allowing Samwell to keep pace with the First Sword of Braavos. 160
- The transformation ends after the duel and leaves him mentally exhausted. 160
- He recognizes its potential but cannot consciously trigger it at that time. 160
