Huo Ling stood on the wooden bed. Already flimsy, it was practically falling apart after the fight.
He pulled the fire axe still lodged in the goblin's skull free. Only then did the goblin beneath him finally die.
Suddenly, a faint speck of light flew from the dead goblin straight at Huo Ling. Before he could react, it vanished into his body.
What was that?!
Huo Ling was surprised, but he felt no changes in his body, so he set it aside for now. He would inspect himself once he survived and had the time.
He picked up his backpack and tossed the food and tools into it. Thankfully, the backpack had not gotten stained with blood.
He threw the backpack into another room, then hurried off to deal with the other four goblins.
He returned to the goblin's corpse and picked up a stone spear.
After cutting the rope with his short knife, he threw away the sharp stone and tied the short knife onto it instead.
An inch longer meant an inch stronger. Long-handled weapons held the advantage in combat.
Compared to a stone spear, the short knife was much sharper. Its slightly curved blade had a sharp tip as well, so using it as a spearhead was no problem.
Huo Ling leaned by the window, keeping an eye on the movements of the other two groups of goblins while tightly binding the short knife to the wooden shaft with grass rope.
It did not take long to make a new spear, and it was far more useful than the goblins' stone spears.
Then he quickly grabbed the spear and fire axe, ran downstairs, and entered the building the other group of goblins was searching.
Just as he was about to climb the stairs, he heard the two goblins chattering as they headed downstairs.
There was no time to go up. He could only crouch beneath the stairs on the first floor. It was dark enough there that the goblins would never notice him unless they paid close attention.
The two goblins came down the stairs one after the other, each carrying a few things.
Huo Ling crouched beneath the stairs, quietly drew a deep breath, and let the first goblin pass.
That was how ambushes worked: let the one in front go, then strike the one behind.
Once the second goblin had come downstairs, Huo Ling rose as well.
He took a great stride forward, gripped the two-meter spear in both hands, and thrust with all his strength.
"Pfft!"
The spearhead pierced the goblin's chest, blood beginning to stream from the wound.
"Hah... urgh..."
The goblin weakly lowered its head to look at the spearhead protruding from its chest and let out a miserable groan.
The goblin in front was alerted. It turned around and saw the tall, powerfully built Huo Ling kick its companion to the ground before pulling the spear from its body.
"Aah!"
The goblin screamed in terror, flinging away the miscellaneous items in its hands. It even dropped its spear.
A perfect opportunity!
Huo Ling was not about to let it slip away. He covered three steps in two, caught up with the goblin, drove his spear through its back, then yanked it free.
The goblin turned around, clutching its chest with both hands as blood sprayed from its mouth. It stared at Huo Ling in terror.
Huo Ling remained expressionless. The two goblins in the building across the way had heard the commotion and were already coming out.
Huo Ling had been able to deal with the previous four goblins so easily only because he had held the advantage of surprise.
Now these two goblins were prepared. They gripped their spears and made chattering cries, as though trying to intimidate Huo Ling or bolster their own courage.
Huo Ling exhaled, tightened his grip on the spear with both hands, bent his knees slightly, and assumed a stance suited for thrusting.

The next fight would be a direct confrontation. He could not afford even the slightest carelessness.
The two goblins slowly circled Huo Ling, spreading out as they searched for a weakness.
Huo Ling knew he could not wait any longer. It was one against two; if one goblin got behind him or to his side—
Once the goblins attacked first, he would be in trouble.
So he let out a loud shout to bolster his courage.
The shout startled both goblins.
Then Huo Ling lunged at the goblin in front of him, his spear aimed straight at it.
The goblin's savagery was stirred as well, and it charged at Huo Ling.
But it was far too short, only around 1.3 meters tall, a massive difference from Huo Ling's height.
Being shorter also meant having shorter arms.
Using the bayonet techniques he knew, Huo Ling flicked his spear upward and knocked the goblin's stone spear aside.
"Pfft!"
Huo Ling's spear pierced the goblin's body again, but this time it was not a fatal wound. The spear struck its shoulder instead.
The pain made the goblin shriek. It reached out and grabbed Huo Ling's spear, and for a moment, Huo Ling could not pull it free.
Enduring the agonizing pain, the goblin shouted for its companion to come help.
Huo Ling tugged the spear twice and saw that he could not pull it out. His expression hardened. He released the spear and instead grabbed the fire axe hanging at his waist.
"Gah—"
The goblin watched Huo Ling swing the axe down at it, its face a mixture of bewilderment and terror.
"Crack!"
The fire axe proved its worth once more. With immense force behind it, the blade cleaved halfway through the goblin's neck.
The goblin's head tilted to one side, and it went straight to the underworld.
At the same time, another faint speck of light flew from its body and entered Huo Ling's.
On the other side, the goblin that had been preparing to help saw that all its companions were dead.
It lost its nerve. Goblins were like that: when they had numbers, they were like monkeys who even wanted to tug a tiger's tail.
When they were few, each ran faster than the last.
The goblin threw away its spear and bolted.
Huo Ling turned his head, and the goblin had already run more than ten meters away without a trace of hesitation.
He could not let it escape. He had no idea how far the goblin tribe was from here, or how many goblins lived in it.
If this goblin escaped and returned with reinforcements, he would be in danger.
Huo Ling stepped on the goblin's corpse and pulled the spear out of it.
He broke into a sprint after it, but the goblin ran faster and faster. Using his momentum, Huo Ling hurled the spear in his hand with all his strength.
The spear arced through the air. With a "pfft!", propelled by tremendous momentum, it struck the running goblin in the thigh.
This time, the creature could not run. It could not pull the spear lodged in its bone free anytime soon and could only drag its badly wounded body forward inch by inch.
But Huo Ling quickly caught up. With one swing of his axe, he ended the goblin's life.
