The outline of some multi-jointed creature gradually came into focus, the scraping of its sharp bony segments enough to make one's teeth ache.
"Damn it! How is it so fast—"
"Mr. Farmer, get behind me! I'll protect you!"
She hurried forward and shielded Locke behind her. Her lips moved as she recited a spell backwards:
"Banish!"
However...
"Uh..."
The girl swallowed. "...I might need to use a different spell."
The banishment spell she had expected did not work. It even seemed to enrage the monster. Its twisted body swayed, and its asymmetrical compound eyes locked directly onto the two of them!
"Roar!"
The monster pounced like a gust of foul wind! The shriek of its claws tearing through the air nearly pierced their eardrums! Worse still...
The girl could clearly see the monster's savage fangs as it lunged, less than a few inches from her throat!
At that critical moment...
"Star Platinum! The World!"
The world turned gray and white.
Then—
"Bzzzz—!"
The gray-white faded away, and color and sound came rushing back like floodwaters through an opened gate!
"Ah?!"
Zatanna snapped back to herself, only to discover in shock that the terrifying monster had been pinned firmly against the wall! It struggled futilely, its twisted limbs scraping against the surface with a piercing screech, but it could not budge the invisible force at all!
Its body was even continuously turning to mist, as though it wanted to transform into fog and escape from the wall!
But...
Zatanna saw a flash of golden light before her eyes.
Magic?
That was right.
