Background / History
Saraphiel first became aware of Shendu as a whispering presence in his consciousness at the age of three. Though Saraphiel regarded him as a cold, destructive will that tempted him toward violence, Shendu was also a part of him from birth. Locke later understood Shendu as a special “yin” counterpart formed to balance Saraphiel's rapidly growing fire energy; the two remained linked at their core while carrying opposing halves of the same power. 81 87
Shendu first answered Saraphiel's call for help against a mechanical monster in the forest. Through their shared body, he tore open a spatial fissure and summoned several dragon phantoms, which dismembered and dragged the machine into the rift. 81
Phantom Stranger later identified the brothers as primordial forces divided directly from the Source. Saraphiel had unconsciously aligned himself with construction—creation, order, life, and existence—when he healed an injured bird; Shendu emerged as the necessary incarnation of deconstruction. 152
Although initially eager for strength, Shendu eventually began suppressing his power after foreseeing a catastrophic confrontation between himself and Saraphiel. He feared that their synchronized growth would ultimately awaken a monster capable of consuming their family and the world. Locke rejected suppression as a solution and promised that the family would confront that future together. 154
During the museum labyrinth trial, Shendu defeated its chess challenge, awakened Merlin Ambrosius by imitating constructive magic, and seized Merlin's Book of Eternity. He also learned that the museum's authority was tied to a Cat's Eye Gem. 158
Locke later used Yamato to sever the connection between Saraphiel and Shendu. The separation succeeded without pain or destabilizing either brother's magical system, granting Shendu an independent physical body and the ability to experience the world directly. 197 198
Appearance
Shendu resembles Saraphiel closely, but his presence is markedly more severe and inhuman. Before receiving his own body, he commonly manifested as a figure of shadows and faint golden light or as a Dragon Soul. 119 154
- Delicate black-haired boy with molten-gold eyes; his left eye can take on an inhuman golden appearance. 139 201
- Formerly appeared as a shadow-and-gold projection identical to Saraphiel in build and features. 154
- Carries himself with an aloof composure and steady gait unusual for a child. 201
- Often forms or rides a soft golden cloud for travel. 215 271
Personality
Shendu is proud, sharp-tongued, suspicious, and highly possessive of his independence. He tends to dismiss people, treasures, and problems that fail to interest him, while treating efficiency as more important than politeness. His arrogance is paired with an exceptional ability to analyze rules, magic, and situations quickly. 158 200
Despite his destructive instincts, Shendu is not simply malicious. Locke recognizes him as an intuitive genius with a childlike desire to be strong rather than a scheming mastermind. His fear of power comes from concern that he, Saraphiel, and their family may be harmed by the future he foresaw. 154
He expresses affection indirectly: through practical help, reluctant cooperation, gifts, and protectiveness. He crossed universes alone to summon Heaven Emperor Clark when Doomsday threatened Locke, and he provided Clark with a disguise and temporary flight rather than allowing him to hesitate during Raz's attack. 181 203
Shendu is also notably acquisitive. He collects jewelry, values rare resources, wants control over valuable locations and artifacts, and reacts enthusiastically to gold—though he is equally motivated by food, especially sundaes. 158 201 217 273
Abilities & Skills
Deconstructive Authority
As the incarnation of deconstructive force, Shendu possesses power associated with destruction, chaos, annihilation, and void. His abilities remain intrinsically connected to Saraphiel's; when one brother awakens more power, the other's side grows as well. 152 154
- Tore open a black-violet spatial fissure with a gesture. 81
- Summoned multiple Eastern dragon phantoms capable of overpowering and transporting a mechanical monster into the fissure. 81
- Can generate oppressive spiritual pressure that frightens animals and other nearby beings. 139
- Fears that the brothers' synchronized growth may trigger the emergence of a greater destructive entity. 154
Fire and Explosive Magic
Shendu can produce highly destructive fire attacks with little preparation.
- Fired an orange-red fireball that vaporized earth and stone, widening a narrow cave entrance. 139
- Used a controlled downward blast to reduce the impact of a long fall. 139
- Favored using a decisive Explosion against Raz rather than allowing the unstable attacker to continue endangering civilians. 203
Constructive Transformation and Animation
Though aligned with deconstruction, Shendu can transform part of his power into constructive, life-like energy due to his shared origin with Saraphiel. 158
- Imitated the energy sustaining Merlin's exhibition hall and awakened Merlin's statue. 158
- Manipulated the museum's magical systems and sensed its newborn consciousness. 157 158
- Briefly halted Merlin and his surroundings while taking the Book of Eternity. 158
Telekinesis and Flight
Shendu can manipulate targets with invisible force and travel through the air.
- Suspended Zeus midair with an invisible force field. 261
- Created golden clouds capable of carrying him through the sky and landing without disturbing the surrounding area. 215 271
- Made Virgil and Dante float, though Dio disciplined him for endangering them. 249
Spellcraft and Disguise Magic
Using magic drawn from the Book of Eternity, Shendu can create specialized effects and practical magical constructs.
- Created Clark's temporary red-and-blue suit, including the S emblem. 203
- Granted Clark temporary flight through eye-based magic. 203
- Designed the suit to conceal Clark's identity and resist damage, but explicitly stated that it provided no real defensive protection. 203
- Limited Clark's borrowed flight magic to three minutes. 203
Dragon Court Space
Shendu has access to Dragon Court space, which can function as a storage space and an inter-universal bridge. 181 217
- Stored a large collection of jewelry within Dragon Court. 217
- Located, opened, and maintained a passage to the Heaven universe without Locke acting as an anchor. 181
- Endured severe spiritual strain and hostile spacetime currents while crossing universes alone. 181
- Summoned Heaven Emperor Clark to aid the battle against Doomsday. 180 181
Divination and Conceptual Perception
Shendu can perceive unusual magical or conceptual phenomena and use divination from the Book of Eternity.
- Identified the magical structure connecting Merlin's statue, hall, and chessboard. 158
- Perceived Meinia and her sister as abstract conceptual beings rather than ordinary human forms. 215 216
- Used a divination spell from the Book of Eternity to locate Barnabas in the Underworld. 216
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Book of Eternity — Merlin's immense magical archive, seized by Shendu after completing the museum trial; contains spells, records, contracts, and divination techniques. 158 159 216

- Golden cloud — A construct of his own power used as personal aerial transport. 215 271
Relationships

- Saraphiel — Twin counterpart and former bodymate. Their powers are opposing halves of the same origin; they argue often but cooperate when necessary. 87 154 197
- Clark Kent — Older brother. Shendu considers Clark foolish and overly hesitant, but supports him in crises and grows closer to him during their Metropolis trip. 181 199 203
- Heaven Emperor Clark — Parallel-universe brother and emergency ally. Shendu crossed into the Heaven universe to request his help against Doomsday. 181
- Dio — Older brother and frequent disciplinarian. Shendu provokes him, yet Dio shows concern for Shendu's safety and behavior. 198 249 250
- Merlin Ambrosius — Museum guardian whose trial Shendu bypassed after awakening him; Shendu took Merlin's Book of Eternity as his reward. 158
- Meinia — An Endless who identifies Shendu as a newborn Endless-like being. Their encounter reveals information about opposites, Creation, Destruction, and the difficulty of coexistence. 216
- Zeus — Griffin companion. Shendu complains about Zeus's enthusiasm but secretly feeds and pets him. 261
