History

Imperial succession crisis

Dai Yunzhao was initially regarded as a future ruler of Star Luo, but his public awakening of the Black Panther Beast Martial Soul, half-level innate Soul Power, and apparent disability caused the court to view him as unfit for succession. The Star Luo Emperor instead placed his hopes in First Prince Dai Weisi and tacitly accepted attempts on Dai Yunzhao's life. 1 4

After Dai Yunzhao killed Dai Weisi, the imperial succession collapsed into crisis. Though many court officials supported Dai Yunzhao, the emperor refused to entrust him with the throne because he lacked the Evil Eye White Tiger bloodline. Dai Yunzhao was stripped of princely status and banished from Star Luo. 5 6

Dai Yunzhao left with military support, eight hundred loyal men, and Zhu Zhuqing. He declared his intent to build a Spirit Master army rather than accept exile passively. 6 9

Return to Star Luo City

Dai Yunzhao's forces intercepted Dai Mubai at Three Gorges Pass, while his influence over the frontier troops and city defenses steadily expanded. After Dai Mubai's death, Dai Yunzhao became the sole remaining heir to the throne, and the border army prepared for a decisive march on Star Luo City. 18 27

Unable to find a general willing to oppose the frontier army, the Star Luo Emperor reconciled with Dai Yunzhao. He accepted that the empire's future could no longer rest on the Evil Eye White Tiger alone and agreed to abdicate after removing die-hard loyalists of Dai Weisi. 27 28

The court then began a formal transfer of power: the emperor issued an abdication decree favoring Dai Yunzhao, who was required to decline three times before accepting. 28 30

War with Heaven Dou

Following the deaths of three Heaven Dou Royal Academy chiefs at Three Gorges Pass, Star Luo rejected demands for an explanation and issued a declaration of war. Dai Yunzhao led the campaign as Grand Marshal, while the Star Luo Emperor ordered that the Crown Prince's commands carry the same authority as his own. 32 33

Star Luo employed feigned retreats, pass defenses, infiltration, and coordinated counterattacks to break the Heaven Dou advance. The empire retook Three Gorges Pass, occupied both flanking passes, and pushed its battle line more than one hundred li north. 40 50 57

Rather than immediately assaulting Jialing Pass, Dai Yunzhao chose to consolidate the captured territory and wear down Heaven Dou's morale and supply capacity. 51

Succession stabilization measures

Dai Yunzhao proposed measures intended to prevent a violent transition:

• Retain existing official ranks rather than conduct a wholesale purge. 28
