Background

Zi Ji is a nearly 300,000-year-old fierce beast and the matriarch of the Hell Demon Dragon King clan. As a pure-blooded dragon, she holds a commanding status among soul beasts and regards weaker beings with open contempt. She serves Gu Yuena, the Silver Dragon King, whom she addresses as her Lord. 10 12 26

After Qin Jiuxiao's second soul-ring condensation causes a powerful lightning tribulation in the Star Dou Forest, Gu Yuena sends Zi Ji to investigate and protect him. Zi Ji initially mistakes Qin for a soul beast undergoing transformation rebirth, unable to identify his true form because of his self-generated soul rings and control over tribulation lightning. 9 10

Zi Ji becomes Qin Jiuxiao's bodyguard, accompanying him to Heaven Dou City and later protecting him while he condenses his third and fourth soul rings. Although she initially treats him as a weak charge, his resilience, unusual powers, and concern for soul beasts gradually earn her respect and affection. 10 17 28

Qin Jiuxiao later gives Zi Ji a drop of his treasure blood. The blood activates her dragon bloodline, purifies her soul power, improves her resistance to heavenly lightning, and accelerates her cultivation past the 300,000-year mark. She returns to the Star Dou Forest to face the resulting tribulation, leaving Qin with a dragon scale so Bi Ji can find him. 40 41

Zi Ji withstands the standard nine bolts of her tribulation by assuming her true form and reflecting the ninth strike. However, Poseidon interferes by adding an extra bolt, critically injuring her after the tribulation appears complete. Di Tian brings her to Gu Yuena, who stabilizes her and discovers that Zi Ji is absorbing the residual lightning rather than rejecting it. 61 62 63
