Tetsu serves as Yakumo Kurama's guardian and accompanies her when she seeks a third member for a temporary Chūnin Exam team. Yakumo describes him as an experienced defensive Earth Release user whose frontal assault ability is comparatively limited; his protection allows her time to prepare her sketch-based genjutsu. He and Yakumo recruit Takuma to cover the squad's close-combat weakness. 27
