Background / History

Jie An was already an old hand serving the City Lord before the Resurrection Corps was established. Within the Corps, he handles the cafeteria, logistics, accounts, medicinal ingredients, and equipment-related support. Though outwardly glib and sociable, he initially distrusts Chu Hengkong, regarding the former assassin as a potentially unreliable recruit. 7 14

His father was a renowned medicine master and a friend of Ji Qiufeng. Seeking medicine to heal Ji Qiufeng’s injuries, his father left Dragon’s Return City and returned mortally wounded, entrusting Jie An with the Jingzang Suffering-Erasing Pestle and an incomplete prescription. Jie An believes he failed to inherit his father’s talent, blaming himself for being unable to properly use the relic or complete the medicine. 25

The Silver-Eyed Tome reveals that the final ingredient for the prescription—the “gold” sought by Jie An’s father—lies in the Marsh. Jie An deduces that it is a newly altered medicinal plant, eventually identifying the previously unseen Everlasting Flower amid Light Poison. This allows him to reformulate the Panacea and fulfill his father’s unfinished work. 25 31 34 38

Appearance

Jie An is a scruffy man in his early thirties, usually seen working in chef’s clothes and a dirty baseball cap. 7

  • Keeps an Orthodox Herbal Treatise close at hand while working. 7
  • Frequently has greasy hands or a disheveled, work-worn appearance from cooking and medicinal preparation. 7 25
  • Carries the dark-gold, lotus-handled Jingzang Suffering-Erasing Pestle. 25

Personality

Jie An is friendly, talkative, and prone to exaggeration, especially when describing food or teasing his fellow Corps members. He is nevertheless highly professional in his logistical duties and takes the Corps’ limited resources seriously. 7 22

He is deeply insecure about his perceived lack of talent compared with his father. His self-doubt becomes especially acute when Ji Qiufeng’s condition worsens, but he refuses to remain safely in the rear and insists on contributing to Dragon’s Return City in whatever way he can. 25 38

Despite lacking confidence in combat, Jie An is courageous under pressure. He panics when his comrades are endangered, yet drives into a battlefield to rescue the poisoned Chu Hengkong and continues preparing medicine while under pursuit. 36 37
