He was out in the suburbs. Work required him to stay close to home during the holiday, but days off were rare, so his wife had booked a farmhouse restaurant. His father-in-law, mother-in-law, and younger brother-in-law were all there.
Free-range eggs, grilled meat, wild greens, and other dishes they rarely ate filled the table. Just as they were about to dig in, Old Li's phone rang.
He went outside to answer it.
One look at him taking the call told his wife something urgent had come up again. She prepared her family for it. "Looks like Old Li has work again. My brother will have to take me home later."
Her mother looked displeased. "Why does he always have to work whenever he gets a holiday?"
His wife smiled. "Mom, Old Li is doing his part for the country." A little later, when Old Li came in to get his jacket, she had already packed him a box of food. "You definitely won't have time to eat once you get there. Have a few bites before the meeting."
Old Li took it, touched, but said nothing.
His wife walked him outside and asked, "Will you be back tonight?"
"I'll try."
"Then I'll wait for you."
Old Li drove toward the city, only to end up being the last to arrive despite being the
