Background

Nolan is a veteran Viltrumite who has spent nearly a thousand years serving the Empire. Before the Scourge Virus devastated the Viltrumite population, he worked as an instructor and trained new recruits through lethal, unrestricted combat. 13 37

He was sent to Earth approximately twenty years before the story. As Omni-Man, he became a celebrated superhero and cultivated ties with the Global Guardians and Global Defense Agency, both to understand Earth's defensive capacity and to prepare for its eventual conquest. 19 He built a life with Debbie Grayson and their daughter Marcia, though his loyalty to the Imperium repeatedly conflicts with his attachment to them. 19 36 66

When Leon is assigned to assist him, Nolan becomes the young Viltrumite's superior and instructor. He orders Leon to integrate into Earth society, avoid revealing his abilities, and attend weekly training sessions. 1 Leon's rapid growth, relationship with Marcia, and unconventional combat style gradually turn their professional relationship into a volatile rivalry. 28 37 67

Appearance

Nolan is a broad, battle-hardened Viltrumite with black hair graying at the temples, a beard, and blue eyes. He typically wears the red-and-white combat suit associated with his Omni-Man identity, complete with a red cape. 1 19 53

  • Full beard. 1
  • Blue eyes. 1
  • Red-and-white combat suit made through Art Rosenbaum's workshop. 53
  • Red cape. 1

Personality

Nolan is disciplined, vigilant, and intensely loyal to the Viltrumite Empire. He initially treats Earth as a conquest assignment and views his friendships, public heroism, and family life as tools for preserving the mission. 19 66 Even when he recognizes Earth's value and the danger posed by the Scourge Virus, he frames caution as a way to protect Imperial interests. 69

His time on Earth has nevertheless given him genuine attachments. He visibly softens around Debbie, worries about Marcia's safety, and struggles to reconcile fatherhood with Viltrumite ideology. 19 36 134 His protectiveness becomes particularly extreme when Leon grows close to Marcia, repeatedly leading Nolan to challenge Leon to destructive fights. 36 67 70

In battle, Nolan is direct, brutal, and competitive. He respects strength and recognizes Leon's talent, but is frustrated by Leon's rapid development and unconventional techniques. 28 37 68 He can also appreciate cooperation when fighting beside an opponent capable of matching his pace. 109 110

Abilities & Skills

Viltrumite Physiology

Nolan possesses the immense physical capabilities of a veteran Viltrumite, including exceptional strength, durability, speed, endurance, and longevity. 13 17

  • Can trade blows with Leon across Pluto, Earth, the Moon, and Mars while sustaining only combat injuries. 13 36 37
  • His strikes can create a visible scar across the Moon and send Leon immense distances through space. 37 38
  • Can fight giant monsters whose bodies withstand the attacks of other heroes. 107 108
  • Possesses super hearing, which Marcia accuses him of using to eavesdrop on her. 76
  • Uses Intelligent Atoms to generate force and reinforce his body. 13 67

Flight and Speed

Nolan can fly instinctively and at extreme speed, using aerial acceleration as both transportation and a combat tool. 6 17

  • Crosses interplanetary distances during training and combat. 13 36 37
  • Uses flight momentum to increase the cutting power of his hand blade against highly durable monster hide. 108
  • Can rapidly pursue, redirect, and plow opponents through terrain while fighting. 13 28

Viltrumite Combat

Nolan is a highly experienced close-quarters fighter whose style emphasizes overwhelming force, grappling, aerial momentum, and sustained pressure. 13 68

  • Uses the Viltrumite Plow to drive opponents through planetary surfaces. 13
  • Can disrupt an opponent's posture with combinations of punches, hooks, knees, and kicks. 68
  • Employs a silent hand blade technique and considers audible attacks a tactical error. 126
  • Against especially resistant enemies, relies on high-speed acceleration rather than raw cutting force alone. 108
