Ch. 721The Peng King in His Sights
Plot points and events
- The Impermanence Sect’s expedition against the Little Peng King ends in disaster: Shang Li is gravely wounded, and two other Purple Mansion cultivators are killed, despite the team carrying a talisman containing a True Lord’s sealed ability.
- Sect leader Yun Wuya reports the defeat to True Lord Xuanji. She judges that the Little Peng King—protected by Thunder Roc Imperial Blood and the Supreme-grade Ancient Thunder Seal—is nearly unbeatable below the True Lord level.
- Xuanji concludes that a direct response would be risky and difficult. The Western Region’s lingering methods of True Lord Heaven-Hanging Thunder Tamer threaten cultivators who have mastered Dao resonance, while a coordinated True Lord incursion would be conspicuous and could give the Little Peng King time to escape.
- She identifies Jiang Chen as a suitable alternative: his unconventional path to True Lord status may let him bypass the region’s restriction. She contacts him through the Formless Palace.
- Jiang Chen sees an opportunity beyond the sect’s request. With his astral qi at the seventh revolution, he is ready to attempt a third core transformation and wants the Thunder Roc as its true form. Capturing the Little Peng King could provide the rarest possible material.
- Aware that the Little Peng King’s real body is concealed and that the Ancient Thunder Seal makes him hard to kill, Jiang Chen devises a plan: use the Mist Flood Dragon to draw him out and create an opening for a single decisive strike.
Character developments and interactions
- Yun Wuya comes to recognize that his own strength is insufficient and that only a True Lord can now confront the Little Peng King. He reports the losses to Xuanji, then withdraws when she dismisses him.
- True Lord Xuanji remains composed and strategic. Rather than risk a direct descent, she considers the Western Region’s restrictions and chooses Jiang Chen as a potentially safer, more effective option.
- Jiang Chen is intrigued by the assignment but approaches it with a personal goal: turning the Little Peng King into the basis for a powerful new transformation. He carefully assesses the danger and plans to rely on misdirection rather than a straightforward confrontation.
- The Mist Flood Dragon is presented as a formidable partner, strengthened by refining the Water Spirit Pearl and beginning to master the middle-grade Abyssal Waves Unraised Seal. Jiang Chen intends to use his growing power as bait.
- The Little Peng King does not appear directly, but his defeat of the expedition and his elusive, heavily protected presence drive the chapter’s events.
Significant themes
- Power and risk: The Little Peng King’s artifact and bloodline overturn expectations, forcing the sect to reconsider its usual methods.
- Strategy over direct force: Xuanji and Jiang Chen both seek ways around the Western Region’s dangers rather than confronting them recklessly.
- Ambition and opportunity: Jiang Chen treats a dangerous mission as a chance to advance his cultivation and gain a rare true form.
- Limits and adaptation: Even powerful figures must acknowledge constraints—whether the sect’s Purple Mansion cultivators, True Lords facing the region’s defenses, or Jiang Chen planning around the Little Peng King’s escape.
