With a single swipe of his claw, wind and thunder roared.
Yet the human skin curled and shrank, dodging the strike. Had it been a person or any solid creature, it could never have evaded it. But the skin was a flat sheet, capable of such inconceivable movements.
Wu Pifu could neither fly nor remain suspended in the air. His claw missed, and he landed on the ground, watching the human skin fly more than thirty feet away before chasing after it again. His speed far surpassed the skin's flying speed with every step he took.
Yamadai had also leaped down from the carriage and given chase, but he was not much faster than an ordinary person. Though every step he took cracked the surface of the stone road beneath him, his speed simply could not increase. Perhaps that was the drawback of his cultivation method.
Wu Pifu rushed beneath the human skin for the second time. Just as he was about to leap high enough to envelop it in both hands, the cry of an infant suddenly came from nowhere. The instant the sound entered his mind, Wu Pifu vaguely saw the dismembered corpse of a baby covered in bamboo skewers. Threads connected the skewers to the baby's limbs and head as it wailed at him.
In that instant, his entire body stiffened, and he could no longer leap toward the human skin. At the same time, the qi and blood within him swiftly circulated through his body, while blood qi surged from within to his flesh. In roughly half a second, he was able to move again.
But the interruption had cost him his chance to jump again. The human skin changed direction and flew toward the rooftops of the residential district.
This was not a modern society.
