Background

Wu Zhong grew up with little family support. His father died when he was young, his mother later died of depression, and he was raised by his maternal grandfather. After his grandfather suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, Wu Zhong worked exhausting hours at an auto repair shop to cover hospital care, rent, and daily expenses. 2

His life changed after an elevator door and a customer’s car door would function for him but not for others. He eventually realized that he had acquired the ability to “weld” doors shut, though he initially considered it useless because it offered no obvious combat or financial benefit. 2 3 4

Desperate to pay for his grandfather’s urgent surgery, Wu Zhong exploited a payment-app vulnerability with help from his online friend Against the Light. He used his Door ability to keep the virtual backdoor from being fixed, received one million yuan, quit his job, paid his debts, and secured long-term care for his grandfather. 5 6 7 8

A hospital haunting revealed that ghosts were real and that supernatural entities were hunting him. Unit 985 took him into protective custody, but after witnessing ghosts and gods demand him as a sacrifice, Wu Zhong distrusted the organization and escaped with Endless Summer. 9 10 12 13 14

Appearance

Wu Zhong is described as having medium-length hair before entering the Calamity Realm. 2 He later relies on Skin-Changing Outfit Sets to alter his outward identity while evading pursuit. 29

  • A men’s Skin-Changing Outfit Set gave him fairer skin, sharper facial features, and a mixed-race appearance. 29
  • He has also carried a women’s outfit set for emergency disguise purposes. 29
  • After becoming a Madblood progenitor, his enhanced physique grants him unusually sharp senses and extreme physical power. 35 44

Personality

Wu Zhong begins as an introverted, financially strained mechanic with a volatile temper when his home province or family is insulted. Despite this, he restrains himself when he recognizes that a fight could cost him the ability to care for his grandfather. 3 20

He is deeply protective of the people he considers his own. His initial desperation centers on funding his grandfather’s care, while later actions—protecting an elderly woman, saving Yang Chunsha, and refusing to abandon injured companions—show that he remains compassionate even after entering the Calamity Realm. 2 5 43 44

Repeated betrayals and threats make Wu Zhong cautious and secretive. He learns from Xia Heng that revealing every ability is dangerous, conceals that he can undo some Door effects, and increasingly uses deception, improvisation, and an opponent’s misconceptions to survive. 13 22 37 40

Abilities & Skills

Absolute Gate

Wu Zhong’s defining absolute characteristic treats things he uses as “Doors,” allowing him to seal them from others. Endless Summer identifies this ability as the reason the ghosts and gods of Mount Lu want him dead: Wu Zhong may eventually be capable of closing their Heavenly Gate. 14

  • Physical doors he uses can become impossible for others to open or close. 4 22
  • He can apply the effect to virtual “doors,” including game interfaces and network ports. 5 7
  • He sealed Endless Summer’s cell door after borrowing an Air Shield from Zhang Qinglang. 13
  • He can secretly undo the Door-Welding effect, though he conceals this from others. 22
  • The ability is substantially passive; using an ordinary door risks turning it into an anomalous derivative and exposing his identity. 22
  • Objects or barriers created through his Gate can be destroyed by his own applied force. 45

Fortress of the Mind

The “Door of the Mind” is an aspect of Wu Zhong’s Absolute Gate. It gives him a nearly cost-free Fortress of the Mind, making him exceptionally resistant to mental interference. 28

  • Remains clear-headed under Tangle’s mental distortion while others are affected. 28
  • Sees through Matsutake’s third-eye illusion and can accurately target enemies despite it. 37
  • Allows him to endure Madblood Clan mental illnesses without the usual cognitive impairment. 30

Madblood Progenitor Physique

After Luo Yi’s First Embrace, Wu Zhong becomes a first-generation Madblood Clan member. Madblood power converts absorbed mental illnesses into enhanced physical ability; Wu Zhong’s Fortress of the Mind makes this exchange unusually favorable. 35 40

  • Can transfer Madblood traits and mental illnesses to another person through an Embrace. 41
  • Can reclaim transferred illnesses through Attribute Deprivation, increasing his own physical attributes. 41 44
  • Possesses extreme strength, speed, recovery, endurance, sensory acuity, immune function, and cellular activity. 35 44
  • At twentyfold physique, his punches exceed three tons and his kicks approach five tons of force. 44
  • Can run at roughly twenty-one meters per second and make controlled jumps up to approximately seventeen meters. 44
  • His biology remains fundamentally human despite the enhancement; excessive acceleration can briefly render him unconscious. 44

Absolute Life Gate and Inner Force

During his battle with Feipeng, Wu Zhong manifests an Absolute Life Gate within his body and captures the opponent’s inner force. 42 43

  • Absorbs Feipeng’s internal energy when his Life Gate is formed. 42
  • Can draw on the captured force through raw physical exertion despite lacking formal internal-arts training. 43
  • Retains the inner force even after Feipeng deactivates the Multiversal Moment that originally sustained it. 44

Calamity Relic Insight

Wu Zhong can decipher the properties of Calamity Relics in high-pressure situations, allowing him to identify practical uses and counters during crises. 28

Improvised Combat

Wu Zhong is not a formally trained fighter, but he adapts quickly under pressure and uses available tools, terrain, and anomalous effects to offset stronger opponents. 18 37 40

  • Uses a damaged pipe wall as a barrier against a pursuing zombie horde. 18
  • Discovers that a second detonation of a Laughing Grenade cures its forced-laughter effect. 18
  • Evades three tracking dogs by barking like a dog. 19
  • Defeats Feipeng by exploiting the mercenary’s assumption that Wu Zhong must be captured alive. 37
  • Kills a Vegetable Man with a cucumber after learning that vegetables are its weakness. 44

Equipment

  • Biological armor right arm — Lent by Xia Heng; forms a purple armguard with two tons of grip strength, high material durability, recoil dispersion, and regenerative properties. 28 42
  • Purple Molten Bombs — Fired through the biological armor; concentrated corrosive and melting attacks with energy comparable to ten kilograms of TNT. 28 37
  • Laughing Grenade — An anomalous grenade that inflicts forced laughter; a second blast removes the effect. 18 38
  • Skin-Changing Outfit Sets — High-value disguises that alter outward appearance and come with matching identification documents; damage to the clothing ends the disguise. 29
  • Vegetable Man seeds — Recovered after destroying a Vegetable Man with a cucumber. 44

Relationships

  • Maternal grandfather — Wu Zhong’s last close family member and the central reason for his early financial desperation. His death leads to the funeral shown later in the story. 2 8 21
  • Xia Heng / Endless Summer — Rescues Wu Zhong from a truck accident, helps him escape Unit 985, protects his identity, and invests heavily in his growth. Wu Zhong addresses him as “Brother Xia.” 6 21 33 47
  • Luo Yi / Shadow Lord — Gives Wu Zhong the First Embrace that makes him a Madblood Clan member. Though initially wary, Wu Zhong develops mutual respect with him. 35 45
  • Yang Chunsha — A traveling companion who supports Wu Zhong in battle. She becomes part of his Madblood Clan branch, tying her fate to his. 41 46
  • Zhang Qinglang — A Celestial Master’s Mansion Daoist and Unit 985-associated mercenary. Wu Zhong manipulates him into bringing him to Endless Summer’s cell before sealing him out. 12 13
  • Lu Guangqi — Unit 985 leader who offers Wu Zhong protection and cooperation terms; Wu Zhong later fears that Lu may sacrifice him to settle with the ghosts and gods. 10 12 13
  • Against the Light — Online friend who helps create the program used to exploit the payment-app bug. 6 7
  • Purple Dust Wanderer / Zi Chen — Online acquaintance who lends Wu Zhong money when he is injured and stranded after escaping the base. 20
