Background / History

Hexi Qing and his younger brother, Hexi Xuan, were orphaned after their father was killed by their tribal chieftain. Considered mixed-blood outsiders, they were abandoned to survive the winter north of the desert with only their family axe. When Xuan began freezing to death, Qing left their shelter and returned with a bearskin and meat after killing a bear, saving his brother. The chieftain who had expelled them was later found beheaded, after which the brothers left their tribe. 12 13

Their father named Qing after the southern word for the color of the sky and Xuan after the color of the earth, telling them to become men who could “hold up the sky and stand upon the earth.” As they grew, Qing earned a reputation among neighboring tribes through his willingness to fight and risk his life, while Xuan became an exceptionally powerful axe fighter. Their martial strength eventually earned them positions as honored guests and generals of the Azure Sheep Tribe. 12

When the Azure Sheep Tribe prepared to invade the south, Qing rejected reliance on shamans to suppress Blood Qi. He instead led repeated raids to condition his warriors through slaughter, believing only cowards could not withstand Sha Qi. The method drove some troops mad, but produced a larger force of increasingly fierce survivors and raised Qing into the tribe’s upper ranks. 12

Qing ordered Xuan to raid Yang Family Fort as an act of “bleeding the opponent before the war begins.” Xuan was killed there by Du Chengfeng, creating a blood feud that Qing intended to settle personally. 12 13

Appearance

Hexi Qing is a young, slight-built man who appears physically unimposing among the Azure Sheep Tribe’s large warriors. He is shorter than most grassland fighters and is compared to a monkey when crouched to sharpen his saber, yet his presence makes even the nine-foot Muer Shu hesitate to approach. 42

He rejects the grasslands’ idea of a heavenly mandate, insisting that warriors should trust only themselves and the blades in their hands. 27 45

He is patient and strategically minded despite his extreme brutality. When Muer Shu demands immediate revenge for Xuan, Qing refuses to rush into what he believes would be a Jizhou ambush. He waits until the Northern Desert Royal Court orders the Azure Sheep Tribe to muster, then uses the broader campaign as cover to strike south. 42

Qing is ruthless toward enemies and openly views the Azure Sheep Tribe as a means to his own rise rather than an authority he intends to serve. After taking Ji Town, he orders its survivors massacred despite the loss of potential slaves and spoils. However, he also recognizes when his soldiers cannot survive a fight and orders them to remain behind Ji Town’s walls rather than become Du Chengfeng’s prey. 45 48
