Background

Commander Liu governed the Great Chen border region of Jizhou, collecting grain and military pay from local communities while providing military protection against Hu raids. Soldiers under his command built Yang Family Fort's fortified manor, allowing nearby farmers to shelter during attacks. 2

The imperial court assigned Wang Gaocheng, a sharpening artisan and military inspector, to secretly monitor Liu's actions. Liu cultivated a refined, scholarly friendship with Wang while concealing his preparations for an unauthorized northern campaign against the Hu. 35 36

His objective was to provoke a border war, win territory and military achievements, and compel the court to recognize the results after the fact. Wang's failure to maintain Jizhou's military equipment delayed these preparations and made Liu suspect that his plans had been exposed. 36

Recruitment and Wang Gaocheng's Death

Liu visits Yang Family Fort to recruit Du Chengfeng and reclaim the military-specification Broken Horse saber. When Wang Gaocheng presents an unused sword as a test of Du's claimed ability, Liu kills Wang and turns the weapon into one that can be sharpened. 34 35

Jizhou Arsenal

Liu hires Du as a private equipment artisan and brings him into Jizhou Arsenal after an outbreak of abnormal Sha Qi. Du's polishing of the Phoenix General's Banner resolves the immediate crisis and prevents Liu from suffering the same fate as Youzhou's governor. 36 39 41

Fall of Ji Town
