Buzz—
Accompanied by a dizzying sensation of weightlessness, the consciousness of everyone from Shrek was forcibly pulled into an entirely new world.
The moment their senses returned to their bodies, what hit them first was not the crisp, biting cold wind of The Elder Scrolls, but a bone-chilling dampness.
Splash, splash... Icy rain mercilessly lashed their faces and poured down their collars into their clothes, making them shudder involuntarily.
"Achoo!" Wang Dong sneezed sharply, wrapping her arms around herself as she looked around in confusion. "Th-this... where are we? Why is it so cold?"
Before them stretched a dark, dilapidated highway. The streetlights flickered like ghost flames, casting the rain in a ghastly white.
Several abandoned metal cars sat by the roadside, belching black smoke. The air was thick with a mixture of gasoline, mildew, and... a foul stench like rotting flesh.
"So this is that Resident Evil thing?" Xu Sanshi wiped the rain from his face and instinctively tried to circulate the Black Tortoise Shell Technique to ward off the cold. "What rotten luck, this damn weather... Hm?"
Xu Sanshi's expression suddenly changed. He froze in place, his face turning deathly pale. "Fuck! I forgot the Boss said there's no Soul Power here!"
"What are you panicking for?" Dai Huabin forced himself to remain calm, his gloomy gaze sweeping the surroundings. "Even as ordinary people, do you think the combat skills we learned at Shrek can't handle a few petty thugs? Don't forget, we just killed a dragon!"
They were standing at the entrance of what looked like a gas station convenience store. Its glass door hung half-open, and the interior was pitch-black, with strange sounds faintly drifting out from within.
Creak... creak... It sounded like teeth chewing through bone, especially piercing in the silent rainy night.
"Someone in there?" Dai Huabin narrowed his eyes. To display the courage expected of the "son of the White Tiger Duke," he snorted and strode inside. "Hey! You in there! Where is this?"
Huo Yuhao stood behind him with a deep frown. Though his Soul Power was gone, the special qualities of his spiritual power remained.
Just then, the back of his head suddenly tingled. An intensely dangerous instinct made him shout, "Dai Huabin! Don't go over there! Something's wrong!"
"Tch, coward." Dai Huabin ignored him completely. In the corner of the convenience store, he saw a figure in a police uniform with its back turned to him, seemingly crouched over on the floor looking for something.
"Hey! I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?" Dai Huabin walked over impatiently and reached out to pat the figure's shoulder. "This young master is asking you—"
The instant his hand was about to touch it, the figure suddenly stopped moving.
Then it violently turned its head.
Boom! By the flash of lightning outside the window, Dai Huabin saw its face clearly.
No, that could no longer be called a face. Half its cheek had been torn away, exposing stark white bone and bright red gums. Its eyes were cloudy and white, nothing but whites with no pupils, and it still had a chunk of... unmistakably human flesh torn from someone else clenched in its mouth.
"Roar—!!!" The monster let out a beastly howl, its bloody maw snapping straight at Dai Huabin's outstretched hand!
"Fuck?!" Dai Huabin had training, after all, and instinctively tried to pull back, but he had forgotten that he no longer had Soul Power enhancing him! He was as slow as a turtle!
"Ah!!" Though he pulled his hand away, the monster still bit down on Dai Huabin's forearm. Its sharp teeth pierced through his sleeve and sank viciously into his flesh, blood spraying out in an instant!
Pain! Real, tearing pain, and it made Dai Huabin collapse at once.
"Get off me! Get off!!" Dai Huabin screamed madly, instinctively trying to unleash his soul skills. "White Tiger Body-Protection Barrier!!! White Tiger Vajra Transformation!!!"
But nothing happened.
There was no white shield of light, no swelling golden muscles. He was merely a pitiful wretch bitten by a rabid dog, able only to pound frantically on the monster's head with his other hand.
But this monster... did not seem to feel pain! No matter how Dai Huabin hit it, it kept its jaws clamped tight, even letting out excited swallowing sounds from its throat.
"Help! Help me!!" The once-arrogant young master of the White Tiger now shrieked like a slaughtered pig, tears and snot streaming down his face.
"Move!" Bei Bei reacted first. He drew a black pistol from his waist—the M1911 pistol.
Though he had never used this kind of Soul Tool before, he understood the basics of aiming.
Bang!
A deafening gunshot rang out. The bullet struck the monster's shoulder, bursting a spray of blood. The monster staggered from the impact but did not fall. Instead, it released Dai Huabin and lunged at Bei Bei even more violently.
"Th-this thing didn't die?!" Bei Bei was stunned. On Douluo Continent, an ordinary person would have gone down from an injury like that long ago!
"Shoot the head! Boss Lu said to shoot the head!" Huo Yuhao shouted from behind.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bei Bei gritted his teeth, gripping the pistol with both hands as he pulled the trigger repeatedly. Finally, one bullet struck the monster squarely between the brows.
Pop! Like a watermelon bursting, the monster's head snapped back. Its body finally lost all strength and collapsed to the ground like a pile of mud.
Huff... huff... The only sounds left in the convenience store were their heavy breathing.
Dai Huabin clutched his blood-soaked arm and slumped on the floor, his face as pale as paper, his entire body trembling.
"It... it bit me... My Soul Power... it's really gone... Will I die? Will I die?"
Huo Yuhao walked over, glanced at the dead zombie, then looked out into the pitch-black rainy night.
Shadowy figures swayed in the rain, and there seemed to be countless silhouettes like that one gathering toward the source of the gunshots.
"Dai Huabin won't die, but if we don't run now..." Huo Yuhao's voice trembled slightly, though it carried even more calm in the face of despair. "All of us will become things like that."
"Run! Go to that big building ahead—the police station! There might be a way to survive there!"
The group rushed out of the convenience store in a bedraggled panic, stumbling into the rain. The arrogance of I'm invincible under heaven had already been bitten to pieces by that zombie.
What replaced it was a deep, soul-born—fear.
In the real world, on the second floor of the internet cafe.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk." Di Tian watched Dai Huabin cry and howl on the screen, then drained the cola in his hand with satisfaction.
"Three minutes? I overestimated him." Di Tian turned to Xuan Zi, who was staring wide-eyed beside him, and held out his hand. "Two roast chickens. Hand them over."
Xuan Zi swallowed as he watched the vivid, bloody scene on the screen. Suddenly, the chicken drumstick in his hand no longer seemed appetizing.
"Wh-what kind of monster is that? It has no Soul Power fluctuations, yet it feels no pain and won't stop until it dies... It's even more terrifying than the corpse puppets refined by evil soul masters!"
