| Occupation/Role | Patrol Inspectorate intern and Chen Jue’s assigned patrol partner 42 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 27, as an unnamed hat-wearing swordswoman 27 |
Background / History
Wu Nanyuan was born into a low-status collateral branch of the Wu Clan. Her parents died early, and she has lived without familial care since the age of nine. Although she possessed exceptional innate talent, she deliberately concealed it from the clan; she had never publicly displayed her true ability before the black-market incident. 28 47
At the Kaiyang Black Market, she attacked Chen Jue while concealed beneath a bamboo hat. Chen overpowered her without using true qi, broke her sword’s defense, and left her incapacitated after taking her universal USB drive. 27 28
When Wu Nanyuan reported the incident to the Wu Clan’s Twelfth Branch, her account was dismissed because of her insignificant standing. Wu Yu’s mother subjected her to fifty lashes, leaving her back severely wounded despite the protection of her “two waters, one ice” true qi. 28
She was later transferred into Team Four as an intern and assigned to patrol Emerald Lake Street with Chen Jue. Chen recognizes her as the black-market swordswoman and concludes that Director Wu intends to cultivate her as a Wu Clan replacement for Zhang Wei. 42 43
During their investigation of Emerald Lake Street and the Room Fire Cult, Wu Nanyuan reveals that her actual cultivation is far above the third level of the True Qi Realm she shows publicly. She fears that, if her talent becomes known, the Wu Clan will eventually graft her finest spiritual root onto a member of the legitimate line during the Spirit Planting stage. Chen agrees to keep her secret. 45 47
Appearance
Wu Nanyuan is a thin, frail-looking young woman whose reserved bearing gives her an impression of coldness and fragility. She commonly conceals much of her face with a black mask. 42 44
- Long raven-black hair, with wispy bangs and loose strands framing her cheeks. 43
- Narrow fox eyes with distinctly red outer corners. 43 44
- A gaunt build attributed to inadequate nourishment during the Blood and Qi Realm. 47
- Wore a thin black shirt during her clan punishment. 28
- While scouting Emerald Lake Street in disguise, wore a white V-neck T-shirt, black athletic pants, and white sneakers. 44
Personality
Initially quiet and guarded, Wu Nanyuan has difficulty trusting others because her clan repeatedly neglected, punished, and disbelieved her. Chen excluding her from his conversation with Liang Ben particularly upsets her, as it echoes the isolation she experienced within the Wu Clan. 46 47
She is cautious in combat and frank about her limits. Rather than risk facing Liang Ben’s full-strength Hundred-Step Flying Sword, she advises against continuing the fight and acknowledges that her movement technique is inferior to Chen Jue’s. 46
Wu Nanyuan also shows a growing awareness of the cruelty around her. She initially objects to the claim that drug-test subjects are coerced, citing voluntary agreements, but recognizes how profit can turn unwilling people into “willing” victims. 45
Abilities & Skills
True Qi Cultivation
Wu Nanyuan is secretly a sixth-level True Qi Realm martial artist, while publicly maintaining the appearance of a third-level cultivator. 47
- Cultivates “two waters, one ice” true qi. 28
- Her true qi allowed her to endure fifty lashes, though she was still left bleeding and badly injured. 28
- Possesses superior innate talent and a high-quality spiritual root coveted by the Wu Clan’s legitimate line. 47
- Her concealed cultivation is a liability: revealing it could lead to the forced grafting of her spiritual root in the Spirit Planting stage. 47
Swordsmanship
Wu Nanyuan is a capable swordswoman who can project true-qi attacks and react against dangerous ranged techniques. 27 46
- Attacked Chen Jue with sword qi while disguised at the black market. 27
- Formed and launched six ice spikes from her true qi during her fight with Chen. 27
- Fought alongside Chen Jue against Liang Ben, thrusting toward Liang’s chest while Chen attacked head-on. 46
- Deflected Liang Ben’s returning sword light before it could strike her. 46
- Identified the Hundred-Step Flying Sword and explained that its remote sword-pellet control rapidly consumes a True Qi Realm user’s true qi. 46
- Admits that her movement technique is inferior to Chen Jue’s and that she may not evade Liang Ben’s flying sword at full power. 46
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longsword — her primary weapon; used for sword qi, ice-spike attacks, and close-range thrusts. 27 46
- Black mask — worn while serving as a Team Four intern and during patrols. 42 44
- Universal USB drive — carried during the black-market incident and taken by Chen Jue after defeating her. 28
Relationships
- Chen Jue — Initially her black-market opponent; later her assigned Team Four partner. Their relationship develops from distrust into tentative trust after Chen promises to protect her cultivation secret. 27 42 47
- Wu Yue / Director Wu — A senior Wu Clan figure who arranged her transfer into the Patrol Inspectorate; Chen believes Wu Yue is positioning her as a future replacement for Zhang Wei. 42 43
- Wu Yu’s mother — Administered Wu Nanyuan’s fifty-lash punishment after Wu Yu’s death, venting her grief and anger on Nanyuan. 28
- Liang Ben — Met during the Emerald Lake investigation. Wu Nanyuan distrusts his Hundred-Step Flying Sword and provides Chen with its principal weakness. 45 46
