Background

Sasuke is the surviving heir of the Uchiha clan, whose estate and assets were largely confiscated by Konoha after the massacre. The abandoned compound remains a defining place for him: its courtyard, training posts, and leafless tree preserve his memories of childhood and of training with his family. Naruto later reclaims and preserves the estate for Sasuke’s return 107 343.

For much of his life, Sasuke believes that his older brother Itachi murdered their clan solely to test his own ability. His hatred of Itachi becomes the central purpose behind his pursuit of power 106 343.

After killing Itachi, Sasuke learns that the Uchiha had been preparing a coup after years of exclusion by Konoha’s leadership. Itachi accepted an arrangement with Danzō and the Lord Third: he would destroy the clan to avert civil war and protect Sasuke’s life. The revelation leaves Sasuke grief-stricken and directionless, but also opens the possibility of a life beyond revenge 343.

Personality

Sasuke is intensely proud and defines much of his worth through strength. He refuses to ask Naruto how he improved after the Land of Waves because he considers relying on another person’s training methods a weakness. Naruto recognizes that reassurance is less useful to Sasuke than difficult opponents and harsh trials 30.

His pride can become jealousy and self-destructive frustration, particularly when Naruto’s growth leaves him behind. Even so, Sasuke does not abandon his responsibilities when faced with overwhelming danger: against Orochimaru, he initially attempts to stand beside Naruto despite fear, then carries Sakura away when Naruto orders him to prioritize her safety 60.

Sasuke is blunt and emotionally guarded, but shows care through action. He protects Sakura when she collapses, carries her to Central Tower, gives Rock Lee medicine taken from the defeated Sound ninja, and entrusts Naruto with the Uchiha clan’s remaining chakra-conductive metal 64 107.

Even after gaining the Rinnegan, he is willing to learn from his more experienced future counterpart. He listens closely to advice on conserving ocular power and immediately puts it into practice 366.

Sasuke enters the Chūnin Exams as part of Team 7. Rock Lee’s challenge drives him to awaken the Two-Tomoe Sharingan, while Naruto’s sudden growth begins to undermine Sasuke’s confidence in his own position as the team’s prodigy 52 59.

In the Forest of Death, Orochimaru’s killing intent forces Sasuke to confront an opponent far beyond his level. Naruto orders him to evacuate with Sakura, a humiliation that deepens Sasuke’s determination to grow stronger 60.

Orochimaru later implants the Heaven’s Cursed Seal into Sasuke. After the seal awakens, Sasuke defeats the Sound ninja team, but must fight to suppress the corrupting influence of its power 63 64.

Challenge at the Uchiha Estate

Sasuke confronts Naruto over the latter’s concealed power, the golden figure seen in the Forest of Death, and Naruto’s unexplained strength. He reveals his Three-Tomoe Sharingan and challenges Naruto to a duel, but Naruto defeats his Fire Release, Lightning Release, and Chidori with minimal effort 105 106.

Rather than mock him, Naruto explains that Sasuke must not let hatred consume his entire identity. He promises to reveal greater truths once Sasuke reaches the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, establishing their rivalry as a form of mentorship as well as competition 106.

Otogakure Undercover Mission

Naruto offers Sasuke two paths: remain in Konoha under Naruto’s guidance or train under Orochimaru, whose knowledge of the Uchiha bloodline is greater. Sasuke chooses the latter route, leaving Konoha under an official S-rank undercover mission rather than as a deserter 107 145 147.

In Otogakure, Sasuke continues developing Lightning Release and later creates Chidori Sharp Spear. Naruto’s growing list of achievements repeatedly pushes him to demand harsher training from Orochimaru 218.

He subsequently completes field trials of his expanded Chidori techniques and independently defeats Shinnō and the Sky Ninja at Soragakure’s Flying Fortress. News of Naruto becoming Hokage nevertheless reminds him of the widening gap between them 254 314 329.

Itachi’s Death and the Uchiha Truth

After killing Itachi, Sasuke finds no satisfaction in revenge. Naruto returns him to the reclaimed Uchiha compound, heals his wounds, and reveals the political circumstances behind the massacre 342 343.

The truth causes Sasuke’s Mangekyō Sharingan to awaken. Naruto then gives him Itachi’s preserved eyes, allowing him to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and inherit his brother’s final protection 343 344.

Valley of the End Duel

Newly empowered, Sasuke challenges Naruto at the Valley of the End. He deploys Susanoo, chakra arrows, fire techniques, Chidori Stream, and finally a Complete Body Susanoo, but Naruto defeats each escalation with overwhelming speed and force 344 345.

Return and the Six Paths’ Gift

Sasuke rejoins the Konoha 12 at a barbecue after years apart. The familiar gathering briefly leaves him dazed, and he accepts the food Sakura offers him 346.

The Sage of Six Paths later grants Sasuke two Six-Tomoe Rinnegan, explaining that Naruto has surpassed the power the Sage might otherwise have shared between them. When Sasuke meets his future counterpart, he asks for instruction and quickly learns more efficient use of Amenotejikara. He also delivers the Sage’s message approving Naruto’s unification and development of the Shinobi World 366.

Battle Against Naruto

Sasuke fights alongside his future counterpart and the Seventh Hokage in a large-scale challenge against Naruto. He uses Amenotejikara to set up a joint Chidori attack, then manifests Complete Body Susanoo as the others deploy their own giant transformations. Their coordinated effort cannot overcome Naruto’s intangibility, speed, or superior power; his Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands shatters their defenses 369 370 371.

Afterward, Sasuke is absent when his future counterpart returns to his original spacetime. Naruto tells him that Future Sasuke likely left without a farewell to spare him from dwelling on it 374.
