Power Progression

Background / History

Monster Secret Realms, Monster Dungeons, and raid-boss calamities appeared across the world and devastated human civilization. Conventional firearms and heavy weapons proved largely ineffective against the strongest monsters. In response, Spirit Contract Masters with spiritual power emerged alongside Primordial Contract Spirit Card Pools. 5

Spirit Contract Masters use Spirit Stones earned from monster kills to draw otherworldly beings from these pools. By forming contracts with Contract Spirits, humanity gained the ability to clear dungeons, purge monsters, and stabilize society. 5

Historically, many Spirit Contract Masters exploited their control over spiritual-power supply to threaten or enslave Contract Spirits. The Imperial Capital's Contract Spirit Equality Law later established the principle that Contract Spirits are humanity's partners rather than slaves or subordinates. 72

Public Life and Civilian Contributions

The Imperial Capital demonstrates the law's effects through the everyday coexistence of humans and nonhuman Contract Spirits. Spirits wear fashionable clothing and move freely through public spaces, while a dedicated Giant Commercial Street accommodates especially large spirits. 72

Contract Spirits are not limited to battlefield service. The World Peace Tavern employs Contract Spirits as its owner and maids, and its undead patrons can participate in social life and experience emotions. Doctor's scientific work contributes to communicators, city protective barriers, Abyssal Rift detection instruments, and much of modern civilization's technological development. 74 99 311

Major Defensive Events

During the Golden City disaster, eight SSR Contract Spirits fail to injure the Undead Lord despite using their ultimate attacks. The wounded spirits nevertheless return to defend the civilians, illustrating their role as humanity's protectors even against overwhelming opponents. The eventual victory becomes known as the Crimson Miracle Battle, and Xia Yuan and Mo Shiyu receive Special Honor Medals. 96 99

The Global Summit gathers eleven UR spirits as representatives of humanity's highest-level strength. When Demon attacks the venue, Xia Yuan destroys his monster army before reports reveal simultaneous invasions around the world. UR spirits subsequently become key defensive anchors: Feng Luan guards Beijing, Haotian holds the Spirit Tamer Great Wall, and Xia Yuan's clones support Huijing and Kunlun University. 316 337 340

Races and Forms

Contract Spirits come from numerous races and can possess radically different appearances, abilities, and temperaments. 1

• Human-shaped spirits — Commonly considered desirable because they can communicate easily, are generally easier to cultivate, and are popular among Spirit Contract Masters. 1
• Non-human races — Documented examples include elves, dragon-kind, beast-kind, undead, robots, and spirits with unusual or monstrous forms. 1 30 74
• Form changes — A Contract Spirit can change form during a breakthrough, as demonstrated by the Black Cat Spirit becoming a cat-eared spirit girl. 21
• Multiple combat forms — Xia Yuan can change between distinct character templates, altering his appearance, demeanor, and available powers. His ability to transform from one SSR form into another surprises other Contract Spirits and is not treated as ordinary. 100
• Master–spirit fusion — Feng Luan is described as a legendary existence who fused a Spirit Contract Master and Contract Spirit. 195

Contract Spirits do not need to eat to survive; spiritual energy sustains their lives. Nevertheless, they can take part in dining, drinking, and other social activities. 6 74

Contract System

Soul Connection and Contract Priority

When a Spirit Contract Master draws a Contract Spirit, the two initially form a soul connection that sustains the spirit's basic existence. The person who made the draw holds the first right to form a full contract. 2

• A dissatisfied drawer may retain the connection and sell the spirit or transfer it to an organization. 2
• Severing the connection leaves an uncontracted spirit without a source of spiritual power. 2
• A Contract Spirit that remains uncontracted for too long will dissipate and cease to exist. 1 2
• Casually abandoning a drawn spirit and allowing it to dissipate is condemned as a violation of a Spirit Contract Master's most basic responsibilities, regardless of the spirit's rank. 6
• A newly formed Soul Contract can remain unstable, making its participants attractive targets for people seeking to take a valuable spirit. Han Yue identifies this danger shortly after Xia Yuan contracts with Mo Shiyu. 20

Card Pools and Acquisition

Contract Spirits are real beings summoned into the world, rather than virtual characters. A golden light accompanies a Contract Spirit draw, and the Myriad Realms Spirit Card Pool contains beings from many different races. 1

• Contract Spirit drop rates are extremely low, and stronger beings are harder to draw. This scarcity contributes to humanity's continuing disadvantage against monsters. 5
• Mo Shiyu's stated drawing costs are 1,680 Spirit Stones for ten pulls, with a guaranteed Contract Spirit after 180 pulls. The guarantee concerns obtaining a Contract Spirit, not necessarily obtaining a high-rank one. 1 21
• Displayed rank does not always reveal a spirit's full potential. Mo Shiyu's special perception identifies Xia Yuan's hidden Many-Faced SSR attribute while he is still displayed as an R-rank spirit. 2

Spiritual Power Dependency

A Contract Spirit's strength is limited by both its own level and its Spirit Contract Master's spiritual-power reserves. 5

• A weak or inexperienced Spirit Contract Master can restrict an otherwise powerful Contract Spirit's output. 5
• High-consumption abilities can completely exhaust a master's spiritual power. 10
• Support spirits and inscription sets can reduce spiritual-power consumption or restore reserves. 21 35 66
• Ordinary recovery from bodily damage requires a master to expend spiritual power and heal the spirit gradually. Specialized techniques, such as Xia Yuan's Reverse Cursed Technique, can accelerate repair but still impose spiritual-power costs. 68
• Opponents may target the master rather than the spirit to bypass superior defenses. Both ranked competitors and World-Class Wanted Bosses exploit this vulnerability. 60 163

Death and Recovery

A Contract Spirit's death outside protected combat spaces is normally permanent; it disperses and cannot be revived through ordinary means. The spirit cannot simply return to its original world after dying. 10 32

• In the Online Ranked Tournament's special combat space, defeated spirits may revive by consuming large amounts of spiritual power. 54
• In the Contract Spirit Arena Tower, fallen Spirit Contract Masters and Contract Spirits can also be revived at a spiritual-power cost. 78
• Protective barriers are not necessarily sufficient against every attack. Kunlun University activates emergency barriers when Xia Yuan's attacks threaten to overwhelm its Contract Spirit barrier and cause opposing SSRs' true deaths. 149
• Feng Luan's immortal-phoenix nature is an exceptional means of rebirth: she can return after death and become stronger. 300

Enhancement Methods

• Monster hunting — Killing monsters provides experience and Spirit Stones. 5
• Dungeon and Secret Realm clearing — Dungeons provide experience, Spirit Stones, rare materials, and Red-Name Boss drops; Secret Realms can provide Inscriptions. 9 21
• Breakthroughs — Required at designated level thresholds and fueled by Spirit Stones plus materials with sufficient Breakthrough Force. 21 34
• Inscriptions — Equipment-like enhancements that improve a Contract Spirit's attributes or skill efficiency. 21 35
• Soul awakening — High-level spirits can awaken latent soul power through extreme combat and repeated life-or-death battles. 66
• Ranked combat — Arena battles provide practical training and can strengthen certain Contract Spirits through combat experience. 54

Experience and Resource Requirements

SSRs require many times more experience to level up than ordinary Contract Spirits. Support spirits can gain experience while accompanying a stronger combatant: Xiao Hei advances rapidly during Xia Yuan's dungeon runs and eventually reaches Level 100 while he is still Level 51. 8 21 43

A spirit at a breakthrough threshold cannot gain further experience until it breaks through. Required Breakthrough Force varies with the spirit's rank and strength rather than following a single fixed cost: Xiao Hei's first breakthrough requires 3,000 Spirit Stones and materials worth 10,000 Breakthrough Force, exceeding the requirement reported for another student's B-rank damage dealer. 19 21

Secret Realm teams receive less experience per participant, but each master's Inscription rewards are not reduced. Team members can also exchange unwanted Inscriptions, making group farming practical even when solo leveling is more efficient. 22

Exceptional Growth

A Contract Spirit's growth curve, even at SSR rank, is theoretically stable. Xia Yuan's sharply accelerating development is considered abnormal, and his second breakthrough allows him to fuse the abilities of Satoru Gojo and Gilgamesh without switching templates. These developments belong to his unusual progression rather than to Contract Spirits generally. 115 141

Haotian provides another example of exceptional long-term cultivation. Originally an R-card spirit, he grows into a UR under a master he regards as his teacher. His later abilities combine daily spiritual-power gains with lifespan extension, creating compounding growth over many years. 254 262

Independent Existence

Most Contract Spirits rely on their contracted master's spiritual power to remain manifested. Rare exceptions exist. 1 255

Independent Manifestation

Independent Manifestation is a skill that removes the symbiotic restriction between a Spirit Contract Master and Contract Spirit. 255

• Allows a Contract Spirit to absorb ambient spiritual energy rather than relying on its master's reserves. 255
• Removes the need to protect a master during battle or fear the consequences of the master's spiritual-power exhaustion. 255
• If the spirit exhausts its own spiritual energy, it falls into a seven-day slumber. 255
• The skill is more viable for exceptionally powerful spirits; weaker spirits may still dissipate without a master's supply. 255
• The spirit must bear its own combat expenditure. Haotian offsets this with spiritual-energy recovery skills, but later warns that continuous mass monster attacks may outpace his recovery. 255 345

Native Contract Spirits

Native Contract Spirits are unusual beings capable of maintaining physical form without a Spirit Contract Master. They are believed to have appeared during the early development of humanity's contract system. 301

Angel identifies herself as a native Contract Spirit who appeared alone and can maintain her body without a contractor. Her independence is not attributed to a skill like Independent Manifestation. Mo Shiyu understands that other native spirits had generally either dissipated or formed contracts with humans, making Angel's continued uncontracted existence unusual. 301

Outsider Contract Spirits

Although Contract Spirits generally originate from other worlds, World-Class Wanted Bosses use outsider in a narrower sense when discussing Xia Yuan: his power is identified as not entirely produced under the rules of the current world. His rapid growth and solo defeat of Ultimate Terror prompt the bosses to organize a joint elimination attempt before he reaches maximum level. 163

Their discussion also recalls an earlier outsider Contract Spirit who fought three World-Class Wanted Bosses simultaneously and nearly killed them all. This history explains why the designation causes particular alarm among the bosses. 163

Notable Contract Spirits

• Xia Yuan — An R-rank human-shaped spirit whose hidden potential allowed him to transform into an SSR after contracting with Mo Shiyu. He later becomes a recognized UR, attends the Global Summit as Great Xia's rising star, and defeats World-Class Wanted Bosses including Sloth and the Boss with 100% damage contribution. 2 3 316 357 362
• Black Cat Spirit / Xiao Hei — Mo Shiyu's C-rank support spirit, whose breakthrough changed her into a cat-eared spirit girl. She reduces spiritual-power expenditure and reaches the Level 100 cap while accompanying Xia Yuan. 21 43 66
• Platinum Dragon King — An SSR dragon-type Contract Spirit capable of using the devastating Word Spirit: Zhulong. Its power is constrained by Zhou Ke's health and spiritual reserves, and its concern for its critically ill master leads it to seek Xia Yuan's healing assistance. 53 170
• Demon Blade Princess — Luo Ziyan's SSR Contract Spirit and a prominent competitor in the national tournament. She undergoes awakening and continues improving, but later acknowledges defeat against Xia Yuan's UR-level abilities. 71 73 111 203
• Haotian — A UR Contract Spirit who was originally an R-card spirit and possesses Independent Manifestation. He serves as a major defender of the Spirit Tamer Great Wall. 254 255 340 345
• Feng Luan — A UR phoenix Contract Spirit associated with master–spirit fusion. Her immortal-phoenix traits permit rebirth and increased strength after death; during the global crisis she guards Beijing. 195 300 340
• Angel — A native Contract Spirit capable of existing without a contractor. She attends the Global Summit and claims the right to confront Demon because of their longstanding feud. 301 337
• Doctor — A non-combat UR Contract Spirit affiliated with the Spirit Tamer Alliance rather than a nation. He is a leading scientific researcher responsible for major technological advances and the summit's holographic simulation equipment. 311 316
• Owlman — A UR Contract Spirit known as Gotham City's guardian. He uses coordinated clones and a varied technological arsenal against Pierrot's servants. 316 353
• Holy Light Knight — House Mo's max-level SR Contract Spirit, who attempts to stall the Undead Lord while Mo Cheng evacuates Golden City's civilians. 32 87
