Ch. 1321Earth's First Stop
Plot points and events
- While the others pass the time in the sewers, Alvin learns that Ahmanet has already been killed. Ethan has gained godlike abilities to command wind and sand and influence life and death; Benji has been revived, though he faces a long recovery. His spiritual experience may also earn him a chance to train at Kamar-Taj.
- Alvin is puzzled by the witches’ motives and concludes their attack may have had no deeper connection to his theories about fate and free will.
- The story shifts to Attilan on the moon. The Gun Club’s powerful forces have easily beaten back the Inhumans’ attempts to resist its mining operations. The Gun Club is recruiting Attilan’s residents with promises of eventual relocation to Earth, prompting some to seek escape.
- King Maximus is trapped between his original ideals of improving life for Attilan’s underclass and the harsh reality that he now suppresses them. He has seized dictatorial control with Supergiant’s mind-control abilities, but feels hated and powerless.
- Two Mutant spies bring virus-carrying Plague Flies to Attilan. Supergiant secretly lets one escape. It slips into the underground, setting up a viral outbreak on the moon.
- Maximus tortures Supergiant, whom he blames for leading him into failure. She endures the abuse while awaiting Thanos’s reinforcements and yearning for revenge.
Character developments and interactions
- Alvin remains skeptical of his own grand theories, unaware that events on the moon may give them unexpected significance.
- Ethan emerges from the crisis transformed and unusually powerful; Benji gains a possible path toward mystical training despite his physical condition.
- Maximus has become a bitter, unstable ruler, caught between guilt over betraying both the elite and the underclass and his desperate wish to save Attilan. He takes out his frustration on Supergiant, accusing her of manipulating him.
- Supergiant, physically vulnerable and under Maximus’s control, keeps her hatred and plans for revenge alive. She uses her powers to release the fly without drawing notice.
- The people of Attilan increasingly look to the Gun Club as a way out, while its military dominance exposes how unprepared Attilan is for war.
Significant themes
- Ideals versus reality: Maximus’s reformist intentions have led him to reproduce the oppression he once opposed.
- Power and vulnerability: Attilan’s abilities and inherited shield cannot match the Gun Club’s military force; Supergiant’s immense power is likewise undermined by her injuries and Maximus’s control.
- Fate and coincidence: Alvin dismisses his theories, yet a seemingly minor act sets a major disaster in motion.
- Consequences and irony: The witches’ attack has lasting effects beyond Earth, helping create humanity’s first foothold in space while also unleashing a new threat on Attilan.
