Background / History

Kumogakure conflict

Konoha faced a diplomatic and military crisis after Kumogakure's delegation attempted to kidnap the Hyuga Clan's young princess. After the incident was exposed, Kumogakure used it as a pretext to raise an army against the village. 2 3

Its major decisions were initially deliberated by four senior figures before being discussed and finalized by the clan heads, while the Hokage's position carried considerable influence. 2

Sarutobi Hiruzen appointed Shimura Danzo commander-in-chief of Konoha's expeditionary force. During the campaign, the Hyuga handled reconnaissance, while Uchiha Fugaku's force was assigned to eliminate enemy combatants. 20 22 Danzo later negotiated a peace treaty with the Cloud Ninja, securing their withdrawal and returning nearly a thousand prisoners. 55

Invasion and aftermath

The Land of Fire's Daimyo, the Sand Village, and several smaller ninja villages later surrounded Konoha with a coalition force. Danzo estimated the coalition at no fewer than ten thousand ninja. 119 122

An Emergency Shelter below Hokage Rock protected civilians and children during the invasion. Its interior was built with solid iron walls and had space for large numbers of people. 125

The battle left Konoha in ruins and resulted in the death of the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen. Tsunade returned afterward, overcame her hemophobia, and organized medical ninja to treat the wounded. 129

Political reorganization

Following the death of the former Daimyo and the eligible nobles, Shimura Danzo was unanimously elected the new Daimyo of the Land of Fire. 147 Tsunade initially remained in Konoha as the Fifth Hokage, intending to serve until a Sixth Hokage could succeed her. 149

Danzo subsequently pushed through the abolition of Konoha's Hokage position and military role, intending to turn the village into a school within his broader unification plan. 167 168 170 Despite losing its former military status, Konoha remained populated and prosperous, with its streets becoming livelier than before. 282
