Sean spent another night at the hotel with Yuriko.
Well, nothing happened.
They just slept through the night, and Sean was bored out of his mind~
Sean spent half the night figuring out why Vanessa had brought Polaris home last night, only to realize she was afraid he would cheat on her~
She really underestimated him. If he wanted to fool around, couldn't he just do it with Yuriko?
Why did it have to be that stick-thin Polaris?
Vanessa had gone crazy too. He had only shown a little interest in that girl, yet Vanessa remembered it~
Early in the morning, she dragged Yuriko off to the construction site!
After a full night of nonstop work, half the clinic building had already been put up, and they were now assembling the second floor.
This prefab rental-house style was great. It was easy to build, and its only drawback was that it was not particularly sturdy.
But Sean did not care whether it was sturdy or not. As long as it worked, that was enough. If necessary, he could just have Polaris reinforce it with steel frames!
"Mr. White, the building should be completed around four this afternoon."
The manufacturer's representative spoke to Sean with great pride.
Sean kept a straight face, but silently calculated how many extra dollars twenty-four-hour construction would cost him.
The result made his liver ache~
At least five times the normal price!
Watching those workers struggle to hoist the prefab modules with a crane, then install them bit by bit,
Sean felt that if Phoenix and Polaris worked together, they could totally function as a construction crew.
Save money. Sean wanted Phoenix's telekinesis!
That ability was simply too convenient. Picking things up, pouring water, and so on—he would not have to move at all!
For something like assembling a prefab house, Phoenix could do it alone, and more efficiently than several workers and machines combined.
It was not until after nine in the morning that Linda Carter and Ava Ellis arrived, both looking exhausted.
Ava Ellis often looked like she had not woken up yet, so Sean was not surprised.
But seeing Linda Carter look the same way made Sean rather curious.
"What did you do last night?"
Linda's expression stiffened as she stammered,
"I... I didn't do anything!"
Sean gave her a suspicious look, then glanced at Ava Ellis.
"I feel like you're hiding something from me."
"How could we be~"
Linda's face reddened slightly.
"I hope not. This place will be finished this afternoon, so get the furniture and supplies ready."
"Understood, Dr. White. As for recruitment..."
"You found doctors?"
"Two doctors. One is a neurologist from Metropolitan Hospital, and the other is an obstetrician and gynecologist from New Jersey State Hospital."
At that point, Linda cautiously glanced at Sean. Only after seeing that he was not angry did she continue,
"I also found two nurses according to your requirements. They are..."
"How did you negotiate it? What are their terms?"
"One hundred and fifty percent of their current salary and benefits."
"An extra fifty percent..." Sean's heart ached.
"They are all experienced, fully qualified medical professionals. Those terms are not actually that high."
Linda Carter hurriedly explained.
"You don't need to explain. I understand. Anyone willing to come here has no ambitions for the future."
Good that you understand, Linda thought.
Who with any ambition would come to such an unknown little clinic, located in one of Manhattan's most notorious bad neighborhoods?
Ava Ellis sidled over and mysteriously said to Sean,
"Dr. White, someone's stealing your business~ Watson Company announced this morning that their mutant treatment drug has achieved phased results!"
"..."
Sean was confused. He had no idea what Ava Ellis was talking about.
Seeing Sean's expression, the she-devil knew her boss's brain had not caught up yet. She blinked her seductive eyes twice and continued,
"If they cure all the mutants, won't we lose all our high-paying patients?"
Sean rolled his eyes. He finally remembered what that was about. Watson Company had somehow gotten hold of a mutant capable of removing other mutants' powers, then developed a rather unreliable drug based on that mutant's ability...
The United States government saw it and thought, This is good stuff! They supported it with all their might!
It sparked fierce resistance from the Brotherhood~ and things eventually became quite a big deal!
And what was the result?
The drug actually had an expiration period!
The United States government could not even complain about it!
Besides, the high-paying patients Ava Ellis mentioned... that only applied to deals involving mutant abilities~
Otherwise, why was Cyclops still priced by weight on the books?
As long as mutant abilities were not involved, they were charged exactly the same as ordinary people. There was no such thing as high-paying patients!
"Is that Watson Company you mentioned in San Francisco?"
"Yes, yes. Dr. White knows about them too?"
Ava Ellis rubbed up against Sean like a cat, making Linda roll her eyes.
Then there was no mistake. That company was courting death, and the United States government was going right along with them~
They gave Magneto the chance to make a huge spectacle. After that incident... life for mutants would probably become even harder!
Then Sean's mind turned, and he suddenly realized that he had frozen Dark Phoenix~ Without Dark Phoenix, Cyclops and Professor X would not die!
With Professor X around, things seemingly would not reach that point~
Tsk~ his expectations had dropped quite a bit!
"Stay out of mutant affairs~ Let them make trouble on their own!"
Ava Ellis's eyes widened. She had no idea where this scolding had come from~
How had she gotten involved in mutant affairs? She felt a little wronged~
"If you have nothing better to do, keep an eye on that playboy Tony Stark. He was kidnapped in Afghanistan. If you can bring him back, it'll be good for making us some money. Why are you worrying about mutants?"
Sean did not let Ava Ellis off, launching into another round of scolding!
Ava Ellis was nearly furious to death. She was a demon at the level of a demon god, yet now she was being scolded like a grandson by some fake doctor. What was the point of this?
If it were not for the fact that you, Sean White, had a mutant girlfriend, who would care about mutants? Whether they lived or died had nothing to do with her!
Just endure it~ Once that bastard Sean White finally died, she would be free!
Ava Ellis did not want to deal with the fake doctor. She went off to one side and muttered to herself.
A few minutes later, Sean realized that standing around here like idiots was not getting them anywhere. He simply announced that they should disperse and regroup at four in the afternoon to inspect the building together.
Linda still left with Ava.
Sitting in the passenger seat of Linda's car, Ava Ellis suddenly asked,
"Is most of White's money with you?"
"Most of it is."
"Why don't we just run away?"
Ava Ellis egged Linda on.
Linda rolled her eyes at her and asked with pursed lips, "Do you have the nerve?"
"I don't. I owe too much. But you can! Take his money, pay off your debts~ Could he still find you? It's perfect!"
Ava Ellis said casually, resting her feet against the front of the car window.
That's all for today. I'll try for two or three chapters tomorrow~
Why are weekends so busy?
