Background / History

Shortly after arriving in Boston, Sean White took in a silver-gray stray cat that was actually Vanessa in animal form. After she returned to her true form, the two became a couple; by the time of Polaris’s debt crisis, they had been together for more than six months. 2 3

In New York, Vanessa runs a two-story bookstore on Broadway near 116th Street. The shop is under 200 square meters, benefits from its proximity to a university, and serves as the couple’s principal ordinary source of income because Sean cannot freely use money handled by the Black Ledger. 3

Vanessa learned early how dangerous Sean’s debt arrangements could be. During Polaris’s forced execution, she intervened when Sean’s terms became increasingly degrading, comforted Lorna, and questioned what Sean truly gained from debts. Although disturbed by the prospect of taking other people’s lifespan, she was drawn to the possibility of youth and longevity through Source Essence. 3

Vanessa’s bookstore was destroyed in the retaliatory fire connected to Kingpin, while Sean’s apartment building was subsequently blown up.
