Yarrick fired at the Sage with the resolve to die. Every bolt round was blocked by the personal force field built into the Sage's body, detonating harmlessly in midair fifty centimeters away from him.
Since firearms were useless, all that remained was his power sword, carrying his fury toward the traitor.
With a clang, before Yarrick's astonished eyes, the invincible Tech-Priest Sage fell to the ground, letting out a synthesized "Aaaaaaahhhhhh," before the massive metal giant lay motionless on the floor.
Feng Ozke and Yarrick looked at Tech-Priest Sage Kaos, then exchanged glances. Neither of them understood what was happening. But Yarrick saw Kaos's finger twitch toward him before pointing at Feng Ozke.
Understanding Kaos's meaning, Yarrick immediately lunged forward and seized the struggling Feng Kazke. He drove his power sword into the man's body and churned the biological structures inside into pulp.
"Urk—cough, cough!" Under Yarrick's ruthless and efficient stirring, the highborn, influential hive administrator died swiftly. Yarrick sheathed his power sword and watched as Tech-Priest Sage Kaos rose after Feng Kazke's death.
"Why...?"
"Under the terms of the Steel Treaty, we were required to protect their family for the duration of the agreement."
"Then just now..."
"You were too strong. I could not defeat you."
Cold sweat broke out on Yarrick's forehead after hearing Kaos's explanation. He had never known that people of the Adeptus Mechanicus could be so... creatively flexible.
"May I ask a question?"
"I cannot answer. I must know the question before deciding whether you may ask it."
Standard Adeptus Mechanicus style. It seemed what had happened earlier was merely an exception. Yarrick looked helplessly at Kaos's face, packed with cables and mechanical compound eyes, and asked, "Why did you sign the Steel Treaty with them in the first place? Isn't that the highest-level agreement?"
