Take Terminator Armour, for example. A wealthy chapter like the Dark Angels equipped every member of its 1st Company with Terminator Armour, and they could even choose finely crafted relic weapons from the armoury.
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Companies were battle companies, each containing six Tactical Squads, two Assault Squads, and two Devastator Squads. These battle companies bore the chapter's primary combat duties.
The 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Companies were reserve companies, with twenty Tactical Squads, ten Assault Squads, and ten Devastator Squads ready at all times to replenish casualties in the battle companies.
The 10th Company was the Scout Company, usually also the chapter's recruit company. Recruits who had just completed their augmentation surgeries were not yet qualified to wear power armour; what awaited them was modified and reinforced Astra Militarum armour. Only recruits recognized by the chapter could join the first nine companies. Still, some veterans volunteered to remain in the Scout Company.
That was roughly the state of a standard Space Marine chapter. The Lamenters now barely had enough men to make up a single battle company. And judging from the earlier battle, although their bolters had been well maintained, they showed no signs of prolonged firing, while many of their chainswords had chipped teeth.
"That will do." Perturabo patted the Castaferrum-pattern Dreadnought's armour, and the Dreadnought he had badly damaged restarted as well.
"I am... the last survivor... for... the chapter..."
The Dreadnought seemed somewhat dazed, moving with the stiffness of something that had only just awakened. Seeing it raise a hand to attack again, Perturabo pressed a button. Sedatives installed inside the Dreadnought were immediately injected into its sarcophagus.
Watching the sleeping Dreadnought, Perturabo grabbed the Lamenters Chapter Master in one hand and pressed him into a chair, waiting for the drugs
