Background / History
Tyberos had fought for hundreds of years before meeting Gray. His relic claw, Hunger, had accompanied him through centuries of warfare, and his exceptional strength had made him a feared and renowned Space Marine within the Imperium 380 382.
Despite its fighting ability, his Chapter was severely impoverished. Its equipment came from plunder, supplemented by the Ash Tax, which entitled it to seized supplies, and the Blood Tax, which permitted the abduction of people to replenish its ranks. This dependence on supplies helped temper Tyberos’s otherwise forceful attitude toward Belisarius Cawl’s avatar during the Imperial expedition 323 380.
Seventy or eighty years before the Blackstone bounty, Tyberos and his Chapter discovered a Blackstone planet in the Dark Star Region. They traded its location to Matos Forge World for a large quantity of weapons and equipment. His familiarity with that region later became the basis of a major reward from the Lord of the Stars 506 509.
Appearance
- Height: Nearly 3 metres before enhancement; 3.5 metres afterward 487.
- Build: Exceptionally massive and muscular, with visibly enlarged muscles and prominent veins after his transformation 487 489.
- Former facial injury: Half his face lacked flesh, leaving exposed bone. The enhancement serum regenerated the missing tissue 474 487.
- Post-enhancement face: Described as stern and majestic rather than grotesquely disfigured 487.
- Voice: Deep, resonant, and frequently compared to a great bell 487 524 554.
- Later armour: Adamantium Assault Power Armour bearing the golden five-pointed star used by the Lord of the Stars’ forces 499.
Personality
Tyberos combines a cold, withdrawn manner with fierce pride and a volatile appetite for battle. He initially dismisses the Star Army as mere heretics, insists that his Chapter can defeat them, and resists Bulon’s warnings despite the destruction of an earlier reinforcement force. When his own fleet suffers catastrophic losses, his frustration drives him toward a dangerous personal boarding attempt 323 376 426.
His aggression does not prevent practical judgment. He argues that an advance attack could gather missing intelligence, recognizes the superiority of Gray’s equipment, and later questions whether the Hummingbird Assault Boat’s combined roles might compromise its performance. He also studies market prices and bounty opportunities rather than treating his personal terminal solely as a military tool 323 380 504 505.
Serving the Lord of the Stars forces him to reconsider his privileges. When civilians react fearfully to his exposed facial injury, he suppresses an impulse to kill them and accepts Nack’s advice to repair his face. Later, he tells his mortal comrades to stop kneeling because they no longer belong to the Imperium 474 522.
His concern for comrades appears in his efforts to help Dreadnought-bound veterans, his sincere gratitude toward Wells, and his warmth toward Evans and Garland. This does not erase his authoritarian outlook: he later describes recruits as thoroughly tamed weapons and declares that betrayal would be punished by death 489 503 522 532 560.
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Strength and Resilience
The body-enhancement serum raises Tyberos’s physical attributes to five times their previous level, with absorption exceeding Wells’s expectations 487 489.
- Accidentally sends several veteran company captains flying by merely shaking his body while they support him 487.
- Easily defeats Azrael after both have undergone enhancement 492.
- Defeats seven Astartes commanders in approximately ten minutes of unarmed combat; their punches have little effect on his muscles 493.
- Knocks roughly two or three hundred Astartes into the air while charging more than a hundred metres through a mass brawl 494.
- Limits: More than a hundred Astartes eventually pin him beneath their combined weight and exhaust him. His dominance in unarmed combat does not make him invulnerable to power weapons 493 495.
- Unverified claim: He boasts that he could defeat a Primarch after enhancement, but Wells immediately challenges his overconfidence; no such victory is documented 488.
Close-Quarters Combat
Tyberos favours claw weapons and aggressive, rapid attacks, while retaining precise reactions and considerable agility despite his size 381 494 500.
- Uses coordinated high and low claw thrusts against Gray’s head and abdomen 381.
- Calmly evades an Ork boss’s axe, blocks its attack, and tears it apart with a Power Claw 427.
- Catches and tests a thrown Power Halberd before rejecting it in favour of paired Power Claws 500.
- Limit: Before enhancement, Gray decisively outmatches his speed and technique with the Flame Sword 381 382.
Accelerated Healing
The serum strengthens both his body and implanted bionic organs, improving wound closure and recovery 489.
- Regrows the flesh missing from half his face 487.
- Displays rapid blood clotting when Wells takes a blood sample 489.
Military Command
Tyberos commands the loyalty of his Chapter and later adapts to warfare supported by the Lord of the Stars’ equipment and logistics 382 543 545.
- His warriors obey his surrender order despite hesitation and reluctance 382.
- Recruits sailors and mortal auxiliaries, offering exceptional candidates the chance to become Space Marines 524.
- Deploys over a hundred Hummingbird Assault Boats during the invasion of Jerma Hive World 543.
- Entrusts two thousand recruits to experienced veteran captains rather than keeping them out of combat 545.
- Early limitation: His Karen System offensive fails against faster enemy ships and shielded planets. He initially excludes the Astra Militarum because he considers it weak and his Chapter cannot coordinate effectively with it 376.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
Personal Equipment
- Modified Tartaros-pattern Terminator Armour — His older armour, altered to fit his unusually large body. Its protection and mobility are inferior to Gray’s Star-pattern Terminator Armour 380.
- Hunger and Slaughter — Mechanical claw relics seized from other Chapters, fitted with disintegration fields. Gray cuts apart the left claw, Hunger, during their duel 381 382.
- Power Sword and Power Claw — Used together during the campaign against the Orks 426 427.
- Assault Terminator Power Armour — Custom-sized Adamantium armour equipped with two Void Shields, an additional plasma shield, and teleportation. Its unshielded shell is stated to resist nearly ninety percent of individual weapons 497 499.
- Paired Power Claws — His preferred weapons after re-equipment. They fold closely against his arms when inactive without obstructing daily activity 500.
- Personal terminal — Provides access to knowledge, entertainment, market information, and bounty missions. His account initially contains ten thousand Star Coins 505 506.
Chapter Assets
- Refitted warships — His Chapter’s vessels receive extensive upgrades before returning to the Jesta Galaxy 519 520.
- Emperor-class Battleship — Awarded for identifying the Blackstone planet. The Lord of the Stars personally creates it from a meteorite using the Star Navy’s advanced specifications 509 515 516 530.
- Hummingbird Assault Boats — Requested by Tyberos for boarding and decapitation strikes. The design combines plasma and Void Shield protection, heavy weapons, and an internal dimensional teleportation platform; Chapters are initially allocated one hundred each 503 504 505.
Relationships
- Gray — Defeats and recruits Tyberos through a duel. They later fight together against Orks, and Tyberos contacts him about Farahel’s possible acceptance into the Lord of the Stars’ forces 381 382 427 557.
- Nack — Guides his adjustment to civilian life, enhancement training, advanced equipment, and new military rules. Tyberos respects his authority but remains wary of unexpected displays of force 474 489 499 517.
- Director Wells — Oversees his enhancement and explains its effects. Tyberos repeatedly expresses sincere gratitude for the transformation 487 489.
- El — Carcharodons Librarian and trusted subordinate. Helps recall the Blackstone planet and receives responsibility for familiarizing mortal personnel with the refitted fleet 506 507 523.
- Garland — Former Chapter Master whom Tyberos addresses respectfully as a senior. After Garland comes to support the Chapter’s new direction, Tyberos persuades him to become Vice Chapter Master and First Company Captain 530 532 533.
- Kurland — Veteran officer who questions the deployment of almost all the Chapter’s recruits at Jerma. Tyberos answers by emphasizing their experienced captains 545.
- Evans — Mortal captain and longtime comrade. Tyberos takes pride in his improved equipment and training, while Evans carries out fleet and repair orders 522 543 557.
- Azrael — Fellow Chapter Master and sparring rival. Loses decisively to the enhanced Tyberos and later envies his battleship reward 492 518 519.
- Gaia — Issues the targeted Blackstone bounty, explains the material’s properties, and negotiates rewards for its location 507 508 509.
- Lord of the Stars / Art Student — Tyberos’s new sovereign. The fulfilment of the Blackstone reward strengthens his resolve to serve wholeheartedly 516 522 524.
- Farahel — Fallen Space Marine whom Tyberos assists with transport, warship repairs, refuelling, and contact with Gray 554 556 557.
- Bulon and Belisarius Cawl’s avatar — Attempt to restrain his reckless Imperial offensive. His need for equipment makes him more deferential toward Cawl than toward Bulon 323 376.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Karen System Defeat and Surrender
- Insists on confronting the forces attacking twenty Imperial worlds, despite warnings that four reinforcing Astartes Chapters have already been destroyed without providing useful intelligence 323.
- Leads the Imperial Combined Fleet into the Karen System. In three hours, its strength falls from 125 warships to seventy without destroying a single Star Navy vessel 376.
- Attempts planetary attacks and encirclement, then orders preparations for a personal boarding strike. His officers protest and volunteer to go instead 376.
- Receives Gray’s recruitment offer but initially suggests killing him and taking his armour. Accepts a duel whose stakes are safe departure if he wins or service to the Lord of the Stars if he loses 380 381.
- After Gray destroys Hunger and places the extinguished Flame Sword on his shoulder, Tyberos admits defeat, surrenders, and orders his warriors to lower their weapons 382.

- Tours the Lord of the Stars’ territories and encounters unfamiliar civilian attitudes, technology, and Space Marine lifestyles 467 473 474 475.
- Undergoes exceptionally successful enhancement, then tests his strength against fellow commanders and thousands of Astartes. The mass brawl ends with him pinned and exhausted 487 493 494 495.

- Recalls the planet previously traded to Matos Forge World, consults El, and identifies its location for Gaia 506 509.
- Earns an Emperor-class Battleship after the Lord of the Stars claims the planet. Tyberos and El are astonished that the planet’s acquisition and the ship’s construction are accomplished within two days 515 516.

Chapter Rebuilding
- Returns to the Jesta Galaxy to inspect upgraded vessels and select mortal auxiliaries and augmentation candidates 520 524.
- Reunites with his mortal comrades, welcomes their improved equipment, and rejects the expectation that they should kneel before him 522.

- Secures Garland’s acceptance of the Vice Chapter Master and First Company Captain positions 533.
Jerma Hive World Campaign
- Orders the Hummingbird assault after Evans’s retaliatory bombardment destroys the hostile spaceport 543.
- Uses Jerma as a battlefield to temper recruits, supported by veteran captains, advanced vehicles, and mortal auxiliary forces 545 557.
- Meets Farahel’s small group of Fallen, questions their ability to operate independently, and arranges repairs and refuelling while seeking Gray’s assistance 554 556 557.
- Requires reclaimed territory to be cleared of remaining threats before security assessment and military-merit awards. These rewards support further Chapter expansion and equipment acquisition 557.
