Xu Zhi's Supernatural Ability
After telling her two Familiars to return immediately, Xu Zhi opened the inventory and tapped the pink core. Now that she had it, she naturally needed to learn about it.
Once she selected the pink core, a word appeared beside it: [Heart]
"Heart?"
What a baffling name.
After skillfully tapping to learn more, knowledge concerning the [Heart] attribute appeared on the game screen.
[Heart: The Principle of Endurance and Continuance] [It is the principle of life, survival, and protection; the principle of unceasing drums and dancing. It is associated with music, as well as skin and anatomy. In the face of adversity, it is unstoppable, possessing an unyielding optimism and steadfast determination.]
"Wow."
The girl said "wow" without much emotion.
Of all the attributes she knew so far, this was the one whose description felt the most positive to her.
After reading the description, Xu Zhi somewhat understood why this attribute was called [Heart].
"It seems like it would be very useful for the Spirit Vessel."
If she gained anything when activating the Spirit Vessel, the [Heart] attribute's survival and protection might help her hold on until the Spirit Vessel naturally vanished.
But it was too early to talk about that. For now, she had no intention of using the Spirit Vessel again.
Of the eight attributes, she now knew half of them and had gained a rough understanding of how to use cores. Xu Zhi planned to use this to make a deal with Shen Jinwen tomorrow and have her agree to her demands.
That night, no matter how Doggie stared at her with longing eyes and acted cute, Xu Zhi only let Little One consume all the [Blade] attribute cores.
It was not because she favored either one. Xu Zhi felt more or less the same about both Familiars; she was simply distributing the cores according to practicality. Still, when she saw Doggie's dejected expression, Xu Zhi paused subtly. After thinking for a moment, she raised her hand and rubbed its head. Sure enough, Doggie forgot its disappointment the next second, wagging its tail as it frantically pounced on her, unrepentantly trying to lick her again.
".Is this a little dog's enthusiasm?"
Xu Zhi struggled to peel Doggie off herself and secretly swore never to casually pet its head again!
After soothing Doggie, Xu Zhi took out two [Moth] attribute cores.
"That makes four already. Please, awaken a supernatural ability for me!"
Perhaps her prayer had some effect. After consuming the two gray cores, Xu Zhi's hallucination changed again.
She no longer felt herself drawing closer to the candle flame, but this time—
A gray moth seemed to have lost its way. Rather than flying toward the flame, it staggered toward her.
Xu Zhi looked closely and found that this moth was somewhat different from the others. Simply put, it looked more like an exquisite gray butterfly than an ordinary moth.
It hesitated before Xu Zhi for a while, then beat its wings and traced a somewhat wobbly path through the air. At last, it landed on the girl's nose, fluttered its wings once more, and turned into waves of gray motes that merged into her body.
In her daze, Xu Zhi seemed to see the dazzling candle flame in the distance flicker once. Before she could make it out clearly, she regained consciousness the next second.
"."
Xu Zhi was somewhat bewildered. She had little experience with changes in hallucinations, so she had no idea what had happened.
Fortunately, she still had the Game Console!
Xu Zhi lowered her head to look at the game screen. Sure enough, new narration had appeared.
[In the Old World, people borrowed the Formless Art to free their spirits from the shackles of the flesh. They ascended from the material world to the Mansus, crossed the Sea of Dreams, and reached the Sun's abode beyond the Great Dream, obtaining what they sought.] [Today, living beings no longer need cumbersome procedures or powerful faith to obtain supernatural power, but they must still cross the Sea of Dreams. Reaching the Sun's abode remains an exceedingly difficult task.] [And you have taken the first step. Though you seem to have made a few mistakes, was that not also the Moth's choice?] [Change, whimsy, chaos, and secrets—you are its finest embodiment.] [Congratulations, you have obtained the supernatural ability: Eye of Secrets] [The supernatural power consumed when using a supernatural ability corresponds to its level. More powerful supernatural abilities require more energy to sustain them, and the Eye of Secrets is not weak.] [Eye of Secrets: When you use supernatural power, no secret can escape your eyes.][The secrets you can peer into will increase as your supernatural level rises.] [However, you cannot peer into secrets greater than yourself. Use your eyes carefully. When they see what they should not see, they will surely suffer backlash.]
"I took the wrong path?"
Xu Zhi was initially surprised, but then she felt that no one had taught her about this. Was it not normal for her to go wrong?
Then she became happy that she had finally gained a supernatural ability. It was a little regrettable that it was not offensive, but having one was better than having none, right?
"Eye of Secrets... How do I use it?"
Xu Zhi frowned slightly and focused. She soon discovered something different. When she concentrated on her eyes, she could sense that there was something extra within her body.
She could not describe the sensation. Those additional things were like blood flowing through her body, constantly supplying her with "energy," yet they were also like fingers she had been born with. She could easily make them cling to her eyes, though they were not very powerful and could only stay there for about three seconds.
Xu Zhi tried opening her eyes and looking at Doggie. She was actually more curious about the Game Console, but she had taken the warning—[Use your eyes carefully]—to heart. Without question, the Game Console possessed secrets far beyond her own. She could not recklessly court death.
Thus, Doggie still looked the same in her eyes, but a pale yellow flame burned where its heart was. That color was exactly the same as the [Blade] attribute cores. It seemed that she could now use the Eye of Secrets to see a living being's attributes. That was quite a pleasant surprise. Attributes were clearly extremely important; being able to detect an opponent's attributes immediately meant gaining the initiative. And these were only the secrets she could peer into at present. Once she became stronger, she would "see" even more.
As Xu Zhi observed Doggie, she could not see that her own eyes had become clouded over, as though veiled in mist. Once the three seconds were up, the supernatural energy within her was exhausted. The pale yellow flame vanished from her sight, and her pupils returned to normal.
A weakness like the time when she had been gravely ill seeped from every corner of her body. That was the feeling of supernatural power being depleted.
An ordinary person would probably have been driven mad by this weakness, which made every gap between their bones seem to itch, but Xu Zhi had long grown used to it.
She could even put away the Game Console and pull the blanket over herself without changing expression, falling asleep beneath that unbearable discomfort.
After all, this was how she had lived through all those years.
Only before falling asleep, Xu Zhi drowsily thought,
"I should keep one Moth attribute core in reserve from now on."
It could replenish the supernatural energy of her Eye of Secrets after she activated it.
After all, if she could feel a little better, who would willingly endure it the hard way?
