"They assigned us to patrol these areas because they don't want us getting there to claim any spoils," Vivian said. "We're not going to be fools and keep patrolling here."

The underground vault in northern Ashen City was one example. For generations, the city's rulers had stored most of their wealth and precious supplies in an extraordinarily sturdy vault deep beneath the ground.

According to rumor, several powerful Awakened had helped build it when the city was first founded, at enormous expense. It was said to be virtually indestructible.

Its defenses had been reinforced continuously over the years, turning it into an underground vault sealed tight.

The vault was immense. There was no way to empty it in such a short time, nor had the retreating forces had enough time to take everything inside.

More importantly, every level of the vault supposedly required a key. Even Ashen City's current lord might not have authorization to open them all.

There were probably still many treasures inside, making the vault a prime target for the Allied Legion.

Where there was profit, there was intrigue. The Allied Legion could fight as one on the battlefield, but at a time like this, every faction had its own interests.
