When Lynn left Graystone City, the night was at its darkest.
Wrapped in an old cloak, he secretly flew out of the city with flying wizardry and sped north along the main road.
The wind blew over from the low hills, carrying the earthy stench of the land outside Graystone City.
White Stone Main City was quite a distance from Graystone City. Even flying the entire way would take two days.
Flying consumed a great deal of Witch Power, however. With his limited reserves, without using Magic Stones to recover, he could only fly for less than half a day.
And who knew what dangers lay along the road? He needed to remain vigilant at all times and could not waste Witch Power carelessly.
So Lynn chose the method that consumed the least Witch Power while still speeding up his journey.
He moved swiftly, his feet hovering half an inch above the ground like a shadow pushed along by the wind.
More than thirty li after leaving Graystone City, the main road ended, leaving only a dirt path trampled out by travelers.
Wild grass and scattered rocks filled both sides of the path. The moon was covered by clouds, and it was nearly too dark to see the road.
Lynn did not stop.
He had Mental Power to scout the way. He could have walked with his eyes closed.
In the latter half of the night, wind rose across the wilderness.
It carried a rank, fishy odor, like wet fur mixed with rotting flesh, while wolf howls sounded from all around.
Lynn halted, and his Mental Power spread in every direction like a net.
"Just as I thought. These beasts really know how to make trouble for me," he murmured.
