Background / History

Dugu Bo suffered for years from venom produced by his own Martial Soul. Excess toxins escaped his control and accumulated in his body, eventually causing his cultivation to stagnate. The same danger affected his descendants: his son died from snake venom, and he feared that Dugu Yan would suffer a similar fate 60 63 64.

He established a herb garden around the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to suppress his poisoning. Its concealment and surrounding poison formation kept intruders away, but he did not know the names or uses of several valuable plants growing there. Even as a Title Douluo, he did not dare touch the spring’s water after having tried it previously 59 65 66.

Ma Hongjun’s Detoxification Pill cleared his accumulated venom. Ma then proposed storing excess Martial Soul toxins in a Spirit Bone as a longer-term solution for the family. Dugu Bo recognized the method’s feasibility and became grateful for both his own treatment and the prospect of protecting his granddaughter 63 64.

Personality

Dugu Bo is proud of his title and dangerous toward those who provoke him. When Ma Hongjun sneers at him in his own garden, he takes it as a direct insult and intends to torture the intruder. Nevertheless, he is observant enough to hesitate when Ma exposes his poisoning and to reassess Erza’s strength during combat 60 61.

His affection for Dugu Yan overrides much of his pride. Concern for her safety helps persuade him to submit to Ma Hongjun, and he later actively encourages a match between them. He also protects his image in front of her: when recounting his encounter with Erza, he conceals his injuries and claims their fight ended in a draw 62 69 74 75.

He can accept losses without becoming consumed by resentment. Although he regrets not understanding the immortal herbs sooner, he considers the cure for his poisoning more important than retaining the garden’s treasures. As his relationship with Ma improves, he accepts the nickname “Old Poison” and participates in their teasing exchanges 65 75 78.
