Background / History
Madara was once the Uchiha clan’s leader and a legendary shinobi who stood alongside Hashirama Senju. After the battle at the Valley of the End, he faked his death, took Hashirama’s flesh, and later awakened the Rinnegan. He devoted decades to the Eye of the Moon Plan, intending to place the world under an eternal genjutsu that would end conflict through dream-based happiness. 32 35 36
Unknown to Madara, the Uchiha Stone Tablet that inspired his plan had been altered by Black Zetsu. Black Zetsu had manipulated him into pursuing Infinite Tsukuyomi as part of Kaguya Otsutsuki’s resurrection, with humanity intended to become White Zetsu and nourishment for that goal. 37 38
By the time Uchiha Xuan found him beneath the Valley of the End, Madara was elderly, physically decayed, and sustained by the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Xuan exposed Black Zetsu, used the Golden Flame Mantra to show Madara its historical manipulation, and shattered his faith in the Eye of the Moon Plan. 33 37 38
Xuan then redirected Madara’s ambition toward building an “Earthly Divine Kingdom” for the Uchiha clan rather than pursuing an illusory peace. Madara accepted the proposal, allied with Xuan, and pledged to help overthrow Konoha and the existing world order. 39 40
After the alliance, Xuan restored Madara’s youth and peak strength by activating the Hashirama cells in his body. Madara subsequently returned to Konoha in secret with Xuan and remained hidden in Naka Shrine as the Uchiha clan’s trump card. 41 43
Appearance
Madara’s appearance changes dramatically after his restoration.
- Weakened state — An extremely old, shriveled man with completely white hair and beard, connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path by numerous black tubes. 33
- Eyes — Possessed a remaining Rinnegan, described as purple with ripple patterns. 33
- Restored state — Returns to a youthful form with flowing black hair, a cold expression, arrogant eyes, and Warring States-era armor. 41
- Later attire — Wears crimson Warring States-era armor while infiltrating Konoha with Xuan. 43
Personality
Madara is intensely proud, confrontational, and accustomed to viewing himself as above others. Even while close to death, he responds to Xuan’s intrusion with overwhelming pressure, hostility, and contempt for a younger Uchiha who claims he will replace him. 34 35
His commitment to the Eye of the Moon Plan is rooted in his desire to end war and suffering, but Xuan characterizes it as an escape from reality following Madara’s defeat by Hashirama. Madara reacts violently when this defeat and the possibility of deception are raised. 36 37
Learning that Black Zetsu had used him as a pawn devastates Madara; he experiences a complete crisis of faith and bitterly recognizes that his life’s work may have been manipulated from the beginning. 38
Once offered a tangible path to Uchiha power and independence, Madara rapidly regains his fighting spirit. He favors Xuan’s direct, conquest-driven vision over the deceptive Eye of the Moon Plan and embraces the idea of overturning the world through Uchiha strength. 40 42
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Madara retains a Rinnegan even in his weakened state and uses its ocular power to project crushing, tangible pressure.
- Its purple ripple-patterned appearance is identified when Xuan discovers him. 33
- His ocular power creates enough pressure to make the cavern air strain and rocks fall. 36
- His restored vitality makes the Rinnegan deeper and more powerful than before. 42
- Xuan’s Golden Flame Divine Eyes can obstruct Madara’s ability to read him fully. 34
Wood Release Chakra
Madara possesses Hashirama-derived power through transplanted cells.
- He acquired Hashirama’s flesh following the battle at the Valley of the End. 35
- Xuan later activates the dormant Hashirama cells within Madara, restoring his body and power. 41
- At full strength, Madara possesses vigorous Wood Release chakra sharing the same origin as Hashirama’s. 42
Demonic Statue of the Outer Path
Before his restoration, Madara relies on the Demonic Statue to sustain his life.
- Black tubes connect his body to the statue in his underground lair. 33
- The statue reacts to Madara’s anger and is capable of attacking Xuan. 35
- His dependence on it underscores how far his physical condition had declined before Xuan’s intervention. 33 34
Combat Presence and Stealth
Madara’s chakra and killing intent remain formidable despite age and decay, while his restored self is described as capable of standing alongside Hashirama.
- His pressure shakes the underground cavern even while severely weakened. 34
- After restoration, merely clenching his fist detonates the air around it. 42
- He and Xuan infiltrate Konoha without being detected, aided by Madara’s stealth techniques and Xuan’s chakra concealment. 43
Relationships
- Uchiha Xuan — Initially confrontational after Xuan intrudes upon his lair and challenges his authority; becomes Xuan’s ally after accepting the Earthly Divine Kingdom plan. Xuan restores Madara’s youth and treats him as his “number-one partner.” 35 40 41
- Black Zetsu — Believed Black Zetsu to be the embodiment of his will until Xuan exposes it as Kaguya’s creation and the architect of his manipulation. Madara turns on it with intense hatred. 37 38 41
- Hashirama Senju — His historic rival and the only shinobi Madara is stated to have regarded with genuine awe and recognition. Madara’s defeat by Hashirama remains a major emotional wound. 36 42
- Senju Tobirama — Views Tobirama and Konoha as enemies; agrees with Xuan’s intent to confront the village and imagines Tobirama’s terror at the Uchiha’s return. 40 42
- Uchiha clan — Former leader who had withdrawn from the clan while pursuing the Eye of the Moon Plan; Xuan condemns him for neglecting their suffering, which helps push him toward the new alliance. 39 40
Story Role / Major Arcs
Awakening at the Valley of the End
Xuan tracks Madara’s decaying chakra to a hidden underground base behind the Valley of the End waterfall. There, Madara confronts Xuan from his throne beside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and orders White Zetsu to kill the intruder. 33 34
Exposure of the Eye of the Moon Plan
Xuan reveals knowledge of Madara’s secret plan, Hashirama-cell transplant, and Rinnegan awakening. He then exposes the altered Uchiha Stone Tablet, Black Zetsu’s true allegiance to Kaguya, and Infinite Tsukuyomi’s role in creating White Zetsu. 35 37
Collapse and Reawakening
After witnessing Xuan’s illusion of Black Zetsu’s manipulation, Madara breaks down and denounces himself as a fool. Xuan exploits this despair to offer him a new purpose: an Uchiha-ruled Earthly Divine Kingdom built in reality rather than a false dream. 38 39
Alliance and Restoration
Madara accepts Xuan’s proposal and promises to overturn Konoha, the Senju, and the wider world alongside him. Xuan seals Black Zetsu, restores Madara’s youth and strength, and returns with him to Konoha. 40 41 43
