Background and History

Madara and Hashirama Senju were rivals whose conflict continued after both were brought back through Edo Tensei. Madara regarded Hashirama as the only opponent worthy of him. Although Kabuto summoned Madara, Madara resisted Kabuto’s attempt to control him and pursued his own plan 147 148 157.

Madara’s Eye of the Moon Plan involved the Tailed Beasts, the Divine Tree, and the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Black Zetsu worked to restore him to life, but its private aim was to use Madara as a vessel for Kaguya’s revival. Once Fei Yun revealed the manipulation surrounding Kaguya and the Sage of Six Paths, Madara fought alongside him against Hagoromo 131 169 171 173.

He subsequently fought for Fei Yun’s side in the war against Konoha and, later, against the Ōtsutsuki Clan. Isshiki Ōtsutsuki captured and began assimilating him, but Fei Yun and Orochimaru freed him. After recovering, Madara joined the Heavenly Kingdom’s campaign in the Ōtsutsuki Divine Realm 186 205 240.

Appearance

Madara is described with a wild mane of hair and a proud, handsome face. His battle depictions include red Warring States armor, Rinnegan eyes, and towering Susanoo manifestations 157 201 240.

• His restored Rinnegan glow violet 163.
• After absorbing Di Shi’s origin power, dark-yellow starlight appears within their violet ripples 251.
• At that breakthrough, horn-like armor extends from his shoulders and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs revolve behind him 251.

Personality

Madara is openly arrogant and eager to test himself against powerful opponents. Hashirama’s arrival delights him; news of formidable Ōtsutsuki enemies excites him rather than discouraging him. He can also be ruthless, attacking a battlefield without regard for allies caught beneath his meteors and pursuing fleeing enemies after their defenses collapse 147 148 240 253.

His confidence does not prevent tactical reassessment. He delays resurrection when conserving strength serves his plan, targets Di Shi’s supporters when a direct fight becomes an unfavorable war of attrition, and organizes a rescue for Sasuke despite sharply criticizing his descendant’s mistakes 151 252 257.

Rinnegan and Limbo

Madara uses gravitational techniques, chakra absorption, and invisible Limbo shadows in combat 163 180.

• Almighty Push and Universal Pull repel attacks or drag targets into striking range 163.
• Limbo: Border Jail creates shadows with strength comparable to his own; they can also wield Susanoo 180 181.
• Following his later breakthrough, he fields nine Limbo shadows and uses layered repulsion to halt attacks from three Ōtsutsuki leaders 257.

Susanoo and large-scale attacks

• His Perfect Susanoo wields enormous weapons and can overpower Hashirama’s Wood Dragon 148 152.
• Heavenly Obstruction Stars brings down three meteors across a battlefield 147.
• He can combine Limbo shadows with multiple Complete-Body Susanoo, or draw their chakra back into a single Susanoo nearly one thousand meters tall 180 188.
• Against an Ōtsutsuki god’s projection, he creates a nine-thousand-meter Perfect Susanoo. The god’s attack destroys the defense and severely injures him 259.

Sealing and battlefield tactics

• Yin–Yang Release Black Rods can seal a target’s chakra; Madara uses one to incapacitate Hashirama 163.
• He seals Toneri’s Tenseigan power rather than killing him, preserving a source of Ōtsutsuki intelligence 201.
