"That's right. I'm Ho-Oh's Messenger. Ho-Oh taught my Chandelure one of his moves.
"And I came to Ecruteak City this time to see on Ho-Oh's behalf whether humans were still waging war as they once did.
"Humans may no longer be starting wars, but unfortunately, I found that the family Ho-Oh once favored has fallen this far.
"So, on Ho-Oh's behalf, I've decided to abandon them."
Whether Officer Jenny believed him was unclear, but Morty certainly did. His eyes shone with admiration.
As a Pokémon League officer, Officer Jenny still had doubts about Roy, who had appeared out of nowhere and called himself "Ho-Oh's Messenger."
Roy said nothing more. He simply told Officer Jenny to put her hand into the flame above the lamp holder. Its color could be faked, but its healing power could not.
When Officer Jenny hesitated, Roy held his own hand over the flame and put on a look of pure comfort.
Seeing that he was completely unharmed, Officer Jenny steeled herself and placed her hand over the Golden Flame.
The burning pain she expected never came. Instead, warmth spread through her hand and across her body.
To her astonishment, the tiny cuts left by splinters when she had cracked the table vanished too. The places where the wounds had been began to itch.
Officer Jenny withdrew her hand and stared at her right hand, now looking as it always had. Her wounds really were gone. This truly was Ho-Oh's flame.
Roy had not lied to her.
Morty and his Gengar were curious too. With Roy's permission, Morty put his hand into the flame, and Gengar put in one fat purple hand. Both felt the same warmth.
Officer Jenny found Roy more mysterious by the moment. Wasn't he Agatha's apprentice?
How had he become Ho-Oh's Messenger
