Ch. 41Taking Photos
Plot points and events
- Roy defeats a Vileplume with Litwick, using Fire Spin to blunt Stun Spore and trap Vileplume in flames before finishing it with Hex. Litwick levels up to 30.
- Roy then faces a level 29 Linoone. Its Normal-type attacks cannot affect Litwick, and Will-O-Wisp burns it, weakening its physical moves. After Professor Oak explains Ghost-type immunities to the confused opponent and audience, the match resumes. Litwick wins with a mix of lingering damage and Ember, sending Roy to the finals.
- Roy is uneasy about the likely finalists: the trainers with Mightyena and Umbreon.
- After the matches, Mary and photographer Dai arrive to take promotional photos of the finalists. Roy is made to wait until last. Wallace stays with him in solidarity, but discovers the others’ brief photo sessions are nothing like Roy’s elaborate half-hour shoot with multiple outfits and poses for Roy and Litwick.
- Realizing Mary is a Litwick fan, Roy accepts the extra attention as a chance to gain Popularity Points and asks whether she would photograph other Ghost-type Pokémon too.
Character developments and interactions
- Roy’s growing visibility at the Rookie Cup improves his mood and may help him earn Popularity Points. In battle, he uses Litwick’s type advantages and status effects effectively.
- Litwick grows stronger, reaching level 30, and proves highly effective against both Vileplume and Linoone.
- Wallace assumes Roy is being singled out because he is a Ghost-type Trainer and stays behind to support him. He is comically frustrated when he realizes that he and the other contestants—not Roy—received the short, ordinary photo sessions.
- The Linoone trainer mistakes Ghost-type immunity for cheating until Professor Oak explains it. The audience also learns about the type’s Normal-move immunity.
- Mary’s fondness for Litwick leads her to give Roy and Litwick an unusually extensive promotional shoot.
Significant themes
- Visibility and acceptance: Roy’s once-unusual Ghost-type Pokémon are attracting curiosity and support as the Rookie Cup promotes him.
- Knowledge and misunderstanding: The Linoone trainer’s accusation reflects how little many people know about Ghost types.
- Strategy and type matchups: Roy’s victories depend on exploiting immunities, resistances, status conditions, and sustained damage.
- Publicity as opportunity: Roy tolerates an exhausting photo shoot because greater exposure could benefit him and other Ghost-type Pokémon.
