Once the light faded, the entire viscount's estate had been razed to the ground, and several surrounding streets had been destroyed as well. Everywhere he looked was a scene of devastation and ruin.
Cain clicked his tongue as he looked at the utterly destroyed buildings around him. "I didn't expect this move to be so powerful."
This was the first time Cain had used the Demon-Breaking Bow and Arrow since creating it, so he had not known its exact power before. He had only known that it was damn strong.
Fortunately, the buildings around the viscount's estate were not very densely packed, so no one had been injured. It could be called a miracle.
The core magic circle of Demon-Breaking Bow and Arrow was Holy Light Magic. Its Mid-Stage Magic Circle consisted of multiple circles for piercing, acceleration, magic power gathering, detonation, enchantment, and more, while the outer layer was divided into a bow and an arrow.
Cain had originally wanted to add a locking magic circle, but later discovered that doing so would severely affect his casting speed. Even with the current five Mid-Stage Magic Circles and two outer magic circles, he had to restrain the target first.
Only then could he focus on drawing the magic circles. Even so, Harold had nearly broken free. If there were any more circles, it would take even longer to cast the spell.
While Cain was still considering whether he could improve it, Ruben saw Harold being killed and stood there as though he had lost his soul.
Naturally, Erza would not let such a good opportunity pass. Her longsword slashed across his chest with a sharp rip, and she then kicked him flying.
She picked up the longsword Ruben had dropped and swung it a few times. It felt quite handy, so she stored it in her Requip Space.
Ruben lay on the ground, pale-faced, muttering without pause, "It's over. We're going to die. We're all going to die."
Cain walked over, intending to ask about the whereabouts of Viscount Livina and the others. Hearing Ruben's words, he gave him a strange look and asked,
"The special medicine has already been developed. Why are you saying everyone in Mudorud is going to die?"
Ruben glanced at Cain and said weakly, "Harold once injected a large number of virus spores into a rat, turning it into a host.
Afterward, that host would carry the virus spores and infect other animals. Then everyone in Mudorud would be infected by those virus spores."
Erza asked strangely, "Wouldn't animals infected with the virus spores die?"
Ruben shook his head. "Those virus spores only affect humans. They are useless against animals."
Cain still did not understand what that had to do with what Ruben had said earlier, so he asked directly, "But what does that have to do with you saying we're all going to die?"
Ruben looked at Erza and Cain with pity in his eyes. "Harold set up a Life-Link Array on the hosts. Once he died, the virus spores inside those hosts would immediately erupt.
The entire Mudorud would be engulfed by virus spores. This would cause the spores inside human bodies to reproduce at an accelerated rate. I don't need to explain what happens after they multiply that quickly.
From health to death, it would take only one night."
"After tonight, everyone in Mudorud will die. Cough, cough, cough."
Hearing Ruben say that, Erza and Cain realized the severity of the situation. Erza stepped forward, grabbed Ruben by the collar, and asked anxiously,
"Tell me quickly. Where are those hosts?"
A strange smile appeared on Ruben's face. Gravely injured, he spoke in fits and starts,
"Cough... cough... Who... who said... there was only one host?"
"What?"
Upon hearing that there was more than one host, Erza looked at Ruben in shock, then turned to Cain, hoping he had a solution.
Cain also found the situation troublesome and could not think of any good solution for the moment.
Just then, a green pillar of light appeared in the city. Looking at the green beam that shot straight into the sky, Ruben cried out in despair, "It's started. It's starting."
The first green pillar seemed like a switch. After it appeared, green pillars rose from every corner of Mudorud one after another.
Only after the number of pillars reached ninety-nine did no more appear. As the pillars emerged, dark green mist visible to the naked eye began floating through the air of Mudorud.
"Th-this... what is this?"
A Kingdom Army squad captain stared at the continuously rising pillars and asked in shock, but no one answered him.
Cain went to the nearest green pillar and activated his magic, attempting Purification.

It could be purified, but the speed was very slow.
"Cough, cough, cough... Cain... how is it?"
Hearing Erza coughing, Cain seemed to sense something bad. Erza's face was flushed red, and she was half-kneeling on the ground, coughing incessantly.
He hurried to Erza's side and helped her sit properly. After examining her, he discovered that she had already been infected by the virus spores, and her condition was rapidly worsening.
Cain did not hesitate in the slightest and immediately used Holy Light: Heal on her. However, he found that the healing speed simply could not keep up with the spores' reproduction rate.
"Damn it, what should I do?"
With no other choice, Cain could only continue maintaining Holy Light: Heal. At this rate, not only Erza, but everyone in Mudorud would die.
What do I do? What do I do? Fuck.
Cain looked at Ruben, intending to ask whether there was another way, but Ruben, already injured, had now been infected by the virus spores and had fallen unconscious.
Through the dark green mist, Cain seemed able to see the people of Mudorud crying out in agony.
Could he only watch helplessly as Erza and everyone else died, without having any way to save them?
No. There was a way.
There had to be a way!!!
Cain forced himself to calm down. The books he had read in the past and Porlyusica's teachings surged through his mind as he tried to find a solution.
Yet no matter how hard he searched, saving everyone in a single night was simply impossible. He slammed his fist into the ground, leaving behind a huge crater.
Lying in Cain's arms, Erza felt her eyelids growing heavier and the figure before her becoming increasingly blurred. She raised a hand, touched Cain's cheek, and used her last bit of strength to say,
"Cain... don't... don't worry about me... you... run..."
After saying that, Erza fell unconscious, leaving only the sound of her heavy breathing echoing in Cain's ears.
"I will save you."
After saying that, something suddenly came to Cain's mind. No, something was wrong.
He looked at Erza in his arms, then sensed his own condition. He realized he did not have symptoms like coughing or a fever.
Why was he not getting infected?
Cain carefully sensed his body and discovered that the moment the virus spores entered him, they were purified by the Holy Light Magic within him.
This discovery thrilled Cain. It was as though he had suddenly seen hope in the depths of despair, and it gave him the urge to cry.
He stopped casting Healing Magic and slowly laid Erza on the ground.
Cain quickly walked to the green pillar. Looking at the unconscious Erza not far away, he said firmly, "I will save you. I will save everyone."
With that, he plunged into the pillar. The instant he entered it, vast amounts of eerie green mist surged toward Cain.
This was evidence of the sheer number of virus spores.
The virus spores flooding into his body were gradually purified by Holy Light, but as more and more spores poured in, their speed increased.
Holy Light Magic's Purification could no longer quite keep up, and Cain began showing symptoms such as coughing and weakness.
Even so, Cain still did not give up. He did not want to see those he cherished disappear before his eyes again while he remained powerless to do anything. He never wanted to endure that feeling again.
Cain shouted, "Holy Light, let me see where your limits are! Come on!!!"
Instead of leaving the green pillar after saying that, he began taking deep breaths, allowing the virus spores to enter his body even faster.
Suddenly, a brilliant and warm radiance awakened from within Cain's body. As it appeared, the virus spores inside him vanished without a trace in the blink of an eye.
No, they had not vanished. They had been purified and absorbed.
A craving rose from the depths of Cain's heart. He wanted more virus spores. He began to find their influx too slow and breathed in even more deeply.
