Background / History

Cain was born in a small village before men in black massacred its adults and abducted its children for experimentation. Taken to the Magic Development Bureau at seven years old, he became a surviving test subject while the other children from his village gradually disappeared. During a painful awakening, he regained memories of a previous life as a thirty-year-old shut-in salaryman and recognized that he had been reborn in Earth-land. 1

At the bureau, Cain met Ultear, another child test subject. He patiently reached out to her through building blocks and resolved to help her escape and reunite with Ur, hoping to prevent the future he knew awaited her. 2 3 Brain later forced a cruel choice on the two children, knocking them unconscious and arranging for Cain to be killed while taking Ultear back to the bureau. 5

Cain escaped by killing the guard assigned to dispose of him, using a steel needle, a stolen sword, and his newly awakened Radiance. Though frightened by his first killing, he swore to return for Ultear. 6 His unusual endurance became evident during his flight: wounds on his feet healed quickly, and he could travel long distances with little fatigue. 7

After reaching Magnolia, Cain joined Fairy Tail and found a new home under Makarov’s guidance. He began studying, taking odd jobs, training his magic and physique, and learning to read with Cana’s help. 10 11 Porlyusica’s examination found him exceptionally healthy despite his history as an experiment subject. 12

Cain later reunited with Ultear, but Brain’s deception had convinced her that Cain abandoned her. Their unresolved past remained a central source of conflict until Cain explained the truth surrounding the bureau and Brain’s manipulation. 108 257
