Purpose and Authority

• Zero Division exists independently of the Gotei 13 and answers directly to the Soul King rather than Seireitei's ordinary chain of command. 2

Royal Keys

• Ordinarily, an official member's body is remade through the Soul King's Power. The remade body becomes a living Royal Key, recognized by the Soul King Palace and able to enter it. 30

History

Liu Chuan's selection and probationary appointment

The Soul King selected Liu Chuan for reasons even Ichibē could not explain. Ichibē delivered the invitation on the Soul King's behalf and described Zero Division's usual selection of innovators whose creations had become foundations of Soul Society. 2

Liu Chuan accepted on the condition that he remain stationed in Seireitei rather than live permanently in the Soul King Palace. Ichibē granted the unprecedented exception, provided Liu Chuan maintained contact and answered any summons or Three Worlds-level crisis. 3

Before his formal induction, the Soul King Palace authorized Liu Chuan to investigate the Twin Hyōrinmaru anomaly. Yamamoto announced him as a probationary or reserve member and formally transferred investigative authority to him. 10 11

Twin Hyōrinmaru investigation

Zero Division intervened because the appearance of two Hyōrinmaru challenged the fundamental laws governing Zanpakuto—an area directly connected to Ōetsu Nimaiya's role as their creator. 11

Using the division's authority, Liu Chuan gained access to restricted records, acquired a Tenshintai through the Technology Development Bureau, and investigated Hyōrinmaru directly with Isshin Shiba. 17 19

The investigation established that a leak from the Royal Seal had produced the foreign golden energy affecting Hyōrinmaru. Liu Chuan defeated the destabilized Zanpakuto with Isshin's assistance, reported the findings, and helped secure the release and restoration of Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Sōjirō Kusaka. 24 25

Formal induction

Liu Chuan traveled to the Soul King Palace with Ichibē, refused to have his body remade into a Royal Key, and instead faced the Path of No Entry. 29 30 31

By activating Magic Circuits and combining Magic Power with Spiritual Power, he survived the trial and surpassed the theoretical limit of a Soul Reaper. Ichibē subsequently recognized him as an official member, and Liu chose Demon King as his codename. 36 37 39

Quincy incident in Hueco Mundo

Following the murder of Expeditionary Force scouts, Yamamoto notified Zero Division due to evidence of Quincy involvement. Ichibē tasked Liu Chuan with investigating the remnants in Hueco Mundo. 72

The Wandenreich used the attacks as bait to draw Liu Chuan into the Forest of Menos, intending to seize what it believed was a living Royal Key. 79 80

Liu Chuan defeated and killed Lille Barro, thwarting the capture operation. Ichibē assessed the battle as both a deterrent and a containment success: it weakened Wandenreich's high-end strength and forced its forces into silence and lockdown. 88 89
