The other side of the bamboo curtain went quiet for two seconds.
Then Konan's voice drifted over again, tentative this time. "Mirai... could you be our instructor?"
Mirai froze.
He turned toward the curtain. Through it, he could make out Konan leaning against the edge of the pool, her eyes shining as she looked his way.
"Huh? Me?"
"Yeah! You're so strong, Mirai. You'd have no trouble teaching us!"
Konan grew more excited as she spoke. "You're already teaching me Paper Release, so teaching Kurenai and Rin too would be the same thing! Kurenai's learning genjutsu, and you know genjutsu, right? Rin's learning medical ninjutsu, so you could ask Tsunade to help teach her. Isn't she the head of the Medical Division?"
Mirai opened his mouth, then swallowed whatever he had been about to say.
Actually... that could work.
He thought of Minato's team in the original story: Kakashi, Obito, and Rin.
There was nothing wrong with him taking Konan, Kurenai, and Rin as his team instead.
Besides, he had taught Konan Paper Release himself. He knew Kurenai's foundation in genjutsu, and Tsunade could train Rin in medical ninjutsu.
"All right." Mirai nodded. "I'll speak to Lord Hokage."
The other side of the curtain fell silent for a second. Then Konan cheered, yanked the curtain open, and jumped out of the pool wrapped in a bath towel. She threw herself against Mirai and planted a kiss on his cheek.
"Mirai, you're the best!"
"Hey! Konan, wrap your towel properly first!"
"Oh, it's fine! It's only you!"
