Volume One: Is This Your Sister?
At the very last moment before waking from her dream, Elysia vaguely remembered reaching out in fury, enormous Imaginary branches crushing that blood-soaked giant in an instant.
But what her fingertips touched was soft bedding, not cold ruins.
She suddenly opened her eyes, gasping sharply. One arm instinctively covered her stomach as she staggered out of bed and turned on the light.
There was no blood. Her skin was fair and delicate. Elysia supported her somewhat weak body as she sat quietly by the bed, her shapely legs pressed together and gently rubbing against each other. Her bare feet rested on the carpet, their arches graceful, faint veins visible beneath the delicate skin on the tops of her feet.
Elysia didn't look for slippers. The air conditioning kept the room at a comfortable temperature, so she didn't feel cold.
In the silent dead of night, only this little corner of the small apartment was lit up, like an isolated island in a vast sea.
An inexplicable urge to confirm something welled up inside her. She stood and quietly walked to An Yu's door, carefully pulling it open—the door was locked from the inside.
"..."
Her already irritated mood instantly sank to rock bottom. Who was he guarding against?!
The next day, An Yu stretched, pulled open the curtains, and pushed open the window. Fresh morning air rushed in, invigorating his unusually energetic mind after a good night's sleep.
Though he hadn't enjoyed mowing down enemies yesterday.
He checked his phone. It was 6:42 in the morning.
"At this hour, Boss Bronya must be up."
He called directly.
Eden's singing rang out from the phone. After about four or five seconds, the call connected.
"Speak."
Bronya's voice was as calm as ever. She didn't like bringing her emotions into work.
"Boss, I'm taking leave."
An Yu got straight to the point.
Bronya: ...
Whether it was his imagination or not, An Yu vaguely heard the sound of fingers clenching tightly. He could even picture those delicate brows furrowing on that cool, aloof face.
"Boss?"
He called out cautiously.
"The project has just begun, and you're taking leave?"
Bronya gritted her teeth. Taking leave right when the project had begun—once it was steadily developing, was he going to lead the whole company in skipping work?!
This was no longer a matter of whether they were close or not. It was a matter of professional attitude! She had to come down hard on him.
Come to think of it, what home address had An Yu put down on his records?
"I'm taking my sister to see a psychiatrist."
The breathing on the other end abruptly stopped. Bronya opened her mouth, and every curse she'd already prepared in her head got stuck in her throat.
"Will one day be enough?"
Her tone softened.
"...I'm not sure, but if there's work, I'll try to finish it online."
An Yu made his promise while pulling open the door. The door felt heavier than usual today. As the sliding door fully opened, Elysia, who had curled up asleep in the doorway, was jolted awake.
But her body in reality wasn't nearly as invincible as it had been in the dream. She slammed her head into An Yu's knee, and the impact made her let out a muffled sound instinctively.
"Mm..."
The call hadn't ended, and An Yu's thoughts had frozen too.
"Whose voice was that?"
Bronya sharply caught that faint moan.
"My sister."
With his mind blank, An Yu answered instinctively.
"You two sleep together?"
Bronya's voice rose, full of disbelief.
An Yu, was this your sister?
"...No! Of course not!"
Having recovered somewhat, An Yu quickly shook his head.
"Then why could I hear her moaning the moment you pushed open your bedroom door?"
Sometimes, Bronya felt that she was simply too good-tempered, which was why these subordinates of hers were always thinking about slacking off at work.
An Yu was even worse. He lied without batting an eye. If he'd found himself a girlfriend, then he'd found himself a girlfriend, but he was playing around and still wanted to slack off at work. He got all the good things!
"She has mental issues."
A cold laugh could vaguely be heard from the other end, but An Yu had no time to soothe his boss's mood. Snapping out of it, he hurriedly carried his sister into the room. The bedding was still warm.
"My phone's running out of battery. Boss, I really need to take my sister to see a psychiatrist today. Let's talk later."
After hanging up, An Yu quickly touched Elysia's forehead. It was burning hot. She had probably caught a cold and developed a fever.
"Sis, lie down for a while. I'll boil some water. We have fever medicine at home."
He sighed, feeling both helpless and distressed.
Water boiled quickly these days, and medical care had developed rapidly alongside such advanced technology. An Yu searched through the medicine cabinet.
A minute later, he returned to the room. Looking at his sister's flushed cheeks and unfocused eyes, he softened his voice.
"Be good, Sister Elysia. Let's take the medicine first. It's not bitter."
The medicine really wasn't bitter. In fact, An Yu had never taken particularly bitter medicine in his life. Maybe that was another benefit of advanced technology?
Perhaps no one else in this world besides An Yu would coax someone into taking medicine like this.
He gently held Sister Elysia up, the medicine resting in his palm. With his other hand, he tested the water temperature. It was a little hot, but she could slowly sip it.
"Yesterday... you made me angry again..."
Elysia's head felt heavy and muddled. Her voice was hoarse and thick with congestion.
But having a fever had its benefits. Because her mind wasn't clear, more than half the anger she'd bottled up last night had dispersed in a haze, leaving only grievance and dependence.
An Yu didn't know what to say. If he had to put it that way, Sister Elysia had indeed gone to sleep angry yesterday, but... he hadn't expected her to be so sensitive. He'd only written some game settings, yet he'd somehow written his sister into a breakdown.
His tone was gentle. "Sister Elysia, take the medicine first. After you take it, sleep well. When you wake up, you won't be angry anymore, okay?"
As the medicine entered her mouth, An Yu could feel that his sister was still groggy, as if she hadn't slept enough.
But before that, he pried open her pearly teeth and only breathed a sigh of relief after making sure she'd swallowed the medicine.
The next moment, those teeth clamped down. An Yu sucked in a sharp breath. Fortunately, someone with a fever wasn't fully conscious, though her bite was still strong.
He struggled to pull his finger free.
"By the way, how much do psychiatrists charge these days?"
Once he was sure his sister had fallen asleep, An Yu began searching for the cost of psychological consultations. Even in an age of highly advanced medicine, top psychiatrists still charged exorbitant fees.
He carefully selected an expert with excellent credentials and a strong reputation.
In the end, he booked an appointment for two in the afternoon. His sister would probably need to sleep for a while longer.
"Life really is one giant trash game. The moment you save up a little money, all kinds of accidents are bound to happen and spend it all."
But looking at it another way, it was fortunate that he'd earned enough money to handle these accidents happening to his family. Thinking that way made him feel more at ease.
Good thing there was that mowing game to help him relax.
An Yu suddenly chuckled twice. He soaked a towel in warm water and wiped Sister Elysia's forehead. He still needed to wipe her armpits, palms, and soles, but Elysia was wrapped too tightly in the blanket.
"Sleep well, Sis," he said softly, tucking in the corners of her blanket.
Seriously, he had no idea how awful he'd been in his dream to make his sister this angry.
Even now, he could vaguely hear Sister Elysia's lips constantly muttering things like "die" and "go to hell."
It was pretty frightening.
Volume One: Chosen Duckling
The faint roar of a motorcycle could be heard outside. A silver-and-white mechanical beast stopped beside An Yu's vehicle. Bronya planted one foot on the ground and removed her helmet, her waterfall-like silver hair spilling loose at once.
If An Yu really delayed work because of relationship issues, she wouldn't care about the friendship they'd built as fellow street racers.
She'd dock his pay hard!
At 7:05 in the morning, Bronya knocked on the door in a steady rhythm.
"Who is it?"
An Yu opened the door, then froze for a moment at the sight of the beautiful girl before him.
"Boss, don't tell me you moved in next door to my place."
Her status hadn't fallen that far. No matter what, Bronya was a genius producer.
"Where's your sister?"
"She just took some medicine and fell asleep."
Bronya took out the fruit basket beside her. An Yu accepted it, intending to wash the fruit for his boss.
Meanwhile, Bronya had already willfully pushed open what looked like a bedroom door. The pink, clean room, filled with a strange pleasant scent, was empty. She sneered.
Good thing she was always quick to act. An Yu hadn't managed to fool her.
"Didn't you say your sister had just fallen asleep?"
Where was she? Had she vanished into thin air? Or crossed into another world? But if she'd transmigrated, there should at least be a truck involved.
An Yu took a bite of an apple and pointed toward the other room.
"She's in my room."
"Your room?"
After politely closing the door, Bronya opened the other one. Inside the not-so-clean but orderly room, a beautiful young woman was indeed lying there.
Even in her sleep, she didn't seem to be in good condition.
Bronya froze for a moment.
"Are you sure she's your sister?"
Bronya subconsciously looked at An Yu, with his black hair and brown eyes, then glanced at An Yu's pink-haired sister, who looked suspiciously like a certain streamer.
"We aren't biologically related. When I was little, my sister found me beside a dumpster."
"Registering my household information later was a huge hassle."
An Yu complained as he handed his boss an apple as well.
It took Bronya a moment to process the weight behind his casual words.
An orphan?
"Here, this is the psychiatrist I booked."
An Yu handed over his phone. He had booked an elderly doctor named Faer.
He wasn't about to let a new doctor practice on his sister. It might be discrimination against inexperienced doctors, but so what if it was?
Bronya wanted to say something but stopped herself. It seemed An Yu hadn't lied to her. Something had really happened in his home.
"Why is she sleeping in your room?"
"My sister slept in the hallway all night. When I found her after opening the door, I didn't think much about it."
"Why was she in the hallway?"
Bronya understood even less.
