Background / History

The Buli Ren originated as the descendants of nomadic Doulan people. After encountering Abundance and drinking the miracle known as the Crimson Spring, they ceased to fear extreme climates or conventional weapons, developed beast-like bodies, and became followers of Abundance. Their bloodline later acquired the moon-mad trait, which heightens their predatory nature and combat ability at the expense of reason. 55

Buli Ren society was historically built around warfare, predation, and the wolf pack. They enslaved skilled Foxkin as “war slaves,” forcing them into frontline combat and subjecting them and their families to systematic abuse, consumption, and the Captive Offering Wine ritual. The physically stronger moon-mad Buli Ren were a terror the Foxkin could not easily resist. 73

War Master Hulei became the most feared figure among them, revered as Hulei Khan and remembered by Foxkin as a nightmare capable of silencing crying children. His imprisonment fractured the wolf pack for centuries, leaving its surviving members scattered and increasingly dependent on outside assistance. 56 69 73

Before the Luofu operation, Dragon Master Taoran arranged for Dan Shu to supply the Buli Ren with Dust Returning and Form Stabilizing Pills. The medicine enabled them to assume convincing Foxkin and Celestial identities, allowing more than a thousand infiltrators to embed themselves across the Luofu as Cloud Knights, merchants, Six Divisions personnel, and other residents. 54 55

Appearance

Buli Ren can pass as Foxkin or Celestials while sustained by form-altering medicine, but their natural bodies are predatory, wolf-like descendants of the Quanrong.

• Their true forms possess ferocious claws and can move on all fours. 55
• Their bodies combine the strength of large predators, feline agility, wolf-like hunting instincts, and unusually tough muscle and bone. 55

Personality

Most Buli Ren are portrayed as instinct-driven and easily provoked. Even trained spies tend to abandon caution when confronted with Hulei’s presence, Wolf’s Poison, or the prospect of restoring the wolf pack. 55 56

Their reverence for Hulei is central to their identity. When Shirou Emiya impersonated the War Master, many infiltrators immediately exposed their true forms, called him their Khan and commander, and entered moon-mad states to fight in his name. 56

This does not apply equally to every member. Doom retains greater strategic restraint than most of his subordinates, while Hulei himself is described as an exceptionally rare Buli Ren who combines ferocity with cunning. 57 60

The Buli Ren’s bodies were transformed by the Crimson Spring and carry traits associated with Abundance.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Luofu Infiltration

Jing Yuan commissioned Shirou Emiya to investigate and subjugate the Buli Ren after warnings that their invasion was already underway. Dan Shu’s testimony exposed the use of form-stabilizing pills and indicated that at least a thousand Buli Ren had entered the Luofu. 50 54 55

Shirou traced the infiltrators through their contacts and destroyed numerous hidden courtyards, killing hundreds of Buli Ren scouts. The speed and scale of the purge forced the surviving agents to relocate and consider ambushing him. 55

False Rescue of Hulei

Shirou, the Ten Lords Bureau, and the Luofu forces staged Hulei’s escape in Golden People Alley. Using Illusionary Transformation, Hulei’s physical data, and stored Wolf’s Poison, Shirou impersonated the War Master to draw hidden Buli Ren out of cover. 56

The deception succeeded because many Buli Ren recognized the Wolf’s Poison and reacted emotionally to their apparent Khan’s return. They revealed themselves, entered moon-mad states, and charged into battle against the Cloud Knights and Ten Lords Bureau. 56 57

Destruction of the Stronghold

Once several hundred Buli Ren had gathered, Shirou used Tsumukari Muramasa to destroy their Golden People Alley stronghold in a single strike. Aoko Aozaki subsequently reversed time to repair the destroyed area. 58

Youqiuyou Crisis and Hulei’s End

The real Hulei later escaped amid the Youqiuyou riot with Phantylia’s assistance. He attempted to exploit the chaos and rebuild his position, but was defeated by Shirou through swordsmanship, sealing techniques, and genjutsu. 69 72

After Hulei’s physical defeat, Shirou later destroyed the War Master’s remaining spirit body with thousands of demon-slaying swords and the Rite of Chants, erasing his soul completely. The victory marked the end of the Buli Ren leader most responsible for the Foxkin’s historical oppression. 73 91

Trivia

• The Buli Ren’s form-stabilizing medicine is misleadingly named: despite sounding like a preservative, it is explicitly capable of altering the user’s form. 55
• Their infiltration force was large enough that Shirou estimated its elimination could yield points equivalent to dozens of gacha draws. 55
• Hulei’s supposed return was convincing enough that Jingliu rated Shirou’s impersonation a seven out of ten, noting that Wolf’s Poison made the Buli Ren unusually easy to deceive. 56
