Chapter 1: Skadi, Skadi

Ursus border.

The wind howled, and the ground shook.

A gargantuan, indescribable monster of twisted flesh bared its claws and fangs, lashing its tentacles through the bitter wind and snow before crashing down.

With the grace of a dancer, Skadi nimbly dodged the monster's attack. She pivoted, ready to raise the greatsword in her hands and strike, only to see her enemy abruptly torn to pieces by a flash of swordlight.

Stepping across the bloodstained earth, a black-haired, black-eyed man strolled out of the blizzard. He discarded the weapon that was fading away in his hand, raised one hand to her, and asked in a friendly tone:

"Miss, could you tell me where I am?"

Several years later, Lungmen.

Standing outside the dormitory, Chen An folded his arms and gazed up at the sky, beginning his daily contemplation of life.

Nothing special had happened. He'd only skipped work and taken a nap, so why had he ended up transmigrating to this unfamiliar world called Terra?

That would have been bad enough.

But why, after accepting reality and deciding he just wanted to travel the world and see some new sights, had he gotten tangled up in so much trouble in only a few short years?

Talulah, Alina, FrostNova, Nian, Dusk...

Curious, she went over and nudged him with her arm. "What's with all the sighing? Did Skadi dump you? Heartbroken?"

Chen An glared at her, unamused. "How many times have I told you? Skadi and I are just friends. Friends!"

Exusiai pouted. "Who are you trying to fool? I saw her kiss you last time."

What did it mean to bring up the one thing he least wanted to hear? Exusiai was doing exactly that.

Chen An flew into a rage. "Kiss me? She was apologizing, okay? Apologizing!"

Exusiai chuckled.

A kiss was an apology? Who would believe that kind of apology? She certainly didn't. Otherwise, after being neighbors for half a year, why had she only ever seen Skadi kiss Chen An?

Weren't she, Texas, Sora, and Croissant all lovely young women? Why had Skadi never taken an interest in them or wanted to cuddle up with them?

Even Chen An didn't believe that a kiss counted as an apology. In all the years since he'd first met Skadi after transmigrating, she'd only ever kissed him.

And not just other people—he'd never even seen her kiss the weapon she used to carry around.

Deciding this wasn't a great topic, Chen An swiftly changed the subject. "Where's Texas? Did she go buy you snacks again?"

"How would I get her to do that? That aloof Lupo."

At the mention of it, Exusiai couldn't help grumbling. "We've been partners for ages, but she still acts like she can barely be bothered to acknowledge me. If she keeps this up, I'm really worried about whoever she ends up with. It'll be so hard for them."

Chen An nodded in agreement.

Exactly. Exusiai talked so much every time. If she ever got a partner, they'd have a hard time.

Suddenly feeling a little uneasy, Exusiai stopped complaining and looked around suspiciously. Seeing no suspicious characters, she muttered, "That's weird," then casually tossed her unease to the back of her mind.

She said cheerfully, "You look like you've got nothing to do. We never finished that game we played last time, so let's try to finish it all in one go this time."

Without giving Chen An a chance to refuse, Exusiai took him by the hand and led him into the dormitory she shared with Texas.

Exusiai was lively, outgoing, and friendly with everyone. She was the kind of person who could always find a way to entertain herself, no matter the circumstances.

Her roommate, Texas, was the opposite: cool and taciturn. Even after getting to know someone, she rarely had much to say, and she seldom had strong opinions about anything.

In short, she had a rather laid-back attitude toward life.

The two were friends, partners, and roommates, but aside from both being women, they had little in common.

If they had to name something, they both worked for Penguin Logistics, and they both liked wearing pantyhose and dressing fashionably.

Texas was in the dormitory.

When Exusiai had been about to go out earlier, Texas had stayed in her room.

But now she was in the living room, leaning against the sofa and playing on her phone.

Since she was at home and had no plans to go out, Texas was dressed comfortably—and quite lightly.

After staring at Chen An for a few seconds and seeing no reaction from him, Texas narrowed her eyes and gave a quiet snort.

She didn't make a scene or argue about it. Holding her phone, she glared at Exusiai, then went back to her room without another word.

Of course, that didn't mean the matter was over. Texas just figured she could settle the score later—by which she meant with Exusiai.

As for Chen An?

Texas had no plans to settle any score with him. After all, he probably hadn't done it on purpose... Well, that wasn't the point. Even if he hadn't meant to, he'd still seen.

The main reason she didn't plan to make an issue of it was that she and Chen An got along well. He'd helped her when she was down on her luck a few years ago, and the care he'd given her over the past six months was more than enough to make it hard for her to hold this against him. Once she accepted someone and got familiar with them, they'd discover that beneath her seemingly cold exterior, Skadi was actually gentle and mild-mannered, and a little clingy. And because she was used to solving problems with force, she could sometimes seem a little slow on the uptake, which made her especially cute.

But he hadn't expected that once the taciturn Skadi got comfortable around him, she'd become so clingy that she had no intention of parting from him.

Over the past few years, Chen An had parted ways with her three times.

The first time, he'd left her with a friend named Talulah.

Talulah was quite capable and had several powerful companions around her—enough to earn Skadi's approval and make her feel secure. That was what Chen An had thought, so after parting ways with Talulah, he'd left Skadi behind, too.

He hadn't expected Skadi to catch up with him not long after he left, and then refuse to leave no matter what.

The second time they parted had been an accident.

Chen An was the sort of person who took things as they came. He didn't like fighting much. Whenever trouble arose, he always tried talking his way out of it first. If he could bluff his way through, everyone was happy. If he couldn't, he'd run. He'd rather avoid fighting whenever possible.

He was a man who loved peace~

Skadi was different. She was a bounty hunter who made a living by taking on jobs and collecting rewards. Her jobs mostly involved fighting, with few exceptions. Some also involved going somewhere to cause destruction. In short, there was one word for it: charge in.

Skadi was used to living that way, but Chen An wasn't interested.

He didn't let his own preferences get in the way of Skadi's life. Instead, he joined her for a period of adventure.

Then, one mission went wrong, and Skadi and Chen An got separated.
