Background / History

Early life and awakening

Dusk was an unawakened Sui Beast fragment with a natural talent for painting but little interest in physical activity or independence. Her elder sister Jie gave her the name “Dusk,” though Jie's Words Become Prophecy ability prevented her from writing any other name. 260

Fengling encouraged Dusk to exercise, learn self-sufficiency, and practice swordsmanship. Dusk quickly copied Fengling's movements once motivated, then gradually manifested increasingly complex paintings: a peony, a peach blossom tree, and finally an entire courtyard. 260 261 262

On November 11, Dusk awakened her Ink Painting power and accepted that she was an individual distinct from Sui. She chose to journey into the world, receiving the Gouwu King Sword and Fox Jade from Fengling as protection and mementos. 262

Fengling's illness and Dusk's confinement

When Fengling suffered from severe Oripathy, Dusk resolved to save her. She created the Windbell Pendant using unusually potent Originium material known at auction as the “Demon King Stone”; Kal'tsit later confirmed that the Originium had been used to save Fengling. 107 113 114

Dusk placed Fengling within the Painted Realm, promising to find a cure if Fengling could endure one month inside her painting. Fengling's devotion to Dusk convinced her to abandon her isolation and seek help from her siblings. 107

After Fengling's family was driven from Gouwu City, Dusk destroyed the city's government and Sui Office buildings without harming anyone. Yan confined her for fifteen years, though her long service protecting Gouwu City—particularly through Catastrophe-warning nursery rhymes—was recognized as merit. 112

Reunion and release

When Fengling returned to Mud Urn Town, she found Dusk changed into an elegant and distant young woman. Dusk initially trapped Fengling in a painted ideal life, but Fengling recognized the illusion through the familiar position and sound of her Windbell Pendant. 106 107

Fengling eventually adapted to the Painted Realm's shifting scenarios, retaining her memories and even altering its contents. Their bond became openly romantic through a private mock wedding within the realm, though they intended to hold a witnessed exchange of tokens later. 108 109

Dusk refused to let Fengling join the Sui Office as a Candlebearer, insisting that Fengling deserved a broader future. Yan later arranged Dusk's early release from confinement following her audience with the Emperor. 113 194
