Background / History
Makoto began as a provisional Grade 3 sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High. His official file dismissed his Echo Mimicry as an unstable, low-output imitation technique, but he privately possessed a far more dangerous ability: Limitless Cognitive Parasite, a technique that turns fabricated rumors and collective belief into power drawn from its subject 1.
During a mission assessed as Grade 2, Makoto encountered a concealed Special Grade cursed spirit created through Suguru Geto’s manipulation. He survived by combining a limited imitation of Gojo Satoru’s spatial power with Echo Mimicry of Uro Takako’s Ushura Bullet, though the battle left both arms badly damaged 2. His survival led to his promotion to Grade 2 and compensation from Jujutsu Headquarters 5.
After learning that Geto was responsible for the cursed-womb attack, Makoto and Shoko Ieiri began exploiting real information to construct rumors capable of empowering his Limitless 3 4. During Geto’s attack on Jujutsu High, Makoto correctly identified Okkotsu Yuta as Geto’s true target and chose to remain at the school with Yuta, Maki, Panda, and Toge 7. He stalled Geto’s forces, defeated multiple Special Grade cursed spirits with borrowed techniques, and held out until Gojo arrived 10 11 12.
Dissatisfied with Gojo’s physically focused training and his own stagnant cursed-energy reserves, Makoto fled to Kyoto Jujutsu High under Shoko’s recommendation. There he befriended Todo Aoi, whose training improved Makoto’s spatial awareness and combat movement 16 17 18 19.
Makoto later defeated Todo during the Exchange Event by using spatial perception, a momentary self-made version of Infinity, and Spatial Overlap 31 33 34. He and Todo subsequently exorcised the Special Grade Imaginary Cursed Spirit Wild Buddha during Makoto’s Grade 1 promotion test 35 38 39.
Wild Buddha’s remains carried an ancient cursed object that enabled Ashiya Dōman’s attempted incarnation within Makoto’s body. Makoto fought Dōman within his own embryonic Innate Domain, ultimately destroying the sorcerer’s soul with an imitated Dismantle at immense personal cost 40 44. He was healed by Yuta after suffering catastrophic injuries and remained unconscious for ninety-nine days 45.
Appearance
Makoto is a thin, frail-looking young man whose weak physical condition often contrasts sharply with the danger of his techniques. He frequently presents himself as injured or harmless to lower opponents’ guards.
- Often wears a monocle or glasses, which he habitually adjusts before provoking someone or making an observation 5 17.
- Uses a tablet, blank drawing paper, pens, and markers for his illustrations 1 5.
- Was described as pale and bandaged after his early Special Grade encounter 3.
- His eyes retain a purple coloration after the battle with Ashiya Dōman 46.
Personality
Makoto is audacious, sarcastic, and deeply committed to his art. He treats illustration, gossip, and psychological manipulation as related creative disciplines, frequently using drawings or inflammatory rumors to embarrass enemies, allies, and authority figures alike 1 6 20.
Beneath his shameless and calculating behavior, he is observant and strategically minded. He identifies Geto’s true objective during the Night Parade, reads Todo’s connection to Tsukumo Yuki from his fighting style, and habitually exploits an opponent’s assumptions in battle 7 18 30.
He is notably concerned with money, compensation, and debt. Financial desperation motivates him through dangerous missions, while the help he receives after the Dōman incident leaves him determined to repay those who saved him 35 38 47.
Abilities & Skills
Limitless Cognitive Parasite
Makoto’s true Limitless is not the inherited Gojo Clan technique in its normal form. It gains feedback from the cognition of others: when rumors he creates cause people to form a biased perception of a target, Makoto can borrow power associated with that target 1 44.
- Uses real details as the foundation for more convincing and effective rumors 3.
- Can develop new applications when public perception of his rumors intensifies, as seen when an article concerning Gojo and Tsukumo Yuki strengthens his gravity-based power 50.
- Requires extreme moral flexibility; Makoto himself defines its condition as having “absolutely no moral bottom line” 44.
- Cannot replicate Gojo’s passive Infinity; he must force a brief “absolute distance” at the instant of impact, consuming enormous cursed energy 31.
Echo Mimicry
Makoto’s recorded innate technique allows him to copy techniques through visual observation and cursed-energy perception 1.
- Replicated techniques normally operate at only 1%–50% of the original’s power and manifest as unstable blue digital noise 1.
- Its effectiveness depends on Makoto’s compatibility and “mental resonance” with the original user 1.
- He can combine copied techniques with Limitless-derived spatial control for unconventional attacks 2 38.
- Attempting techniques beyond his capacity causes severe backlash, as with his failed attempt to invoke Malevolent Shrine against Wild Buddha 38.
Spatial Manipulation
Makoto uses Gojo-derived spatial effects alongside copied techniques to distort trajectories, reposition himself, and create gravitational force.
- Limitless: Blue — Creates attraction and localized gravitational pull; initially difficult for him to project remotely 2 19.
- Ushura Bullet — An imitation of Uro Takako’s technique that distorts space for movement, defense, redirection, and displacement 2 10 11.
- Ushura Bullet: Blue — Uses spatial distortion and Blue to launch targets away 31.
- Azure Fury / Blue Fist: Apex — Compressed Blue-based strikes capable of killing Special Grade cursed spirits or clashing with Todo’s Black Flash 11 32 33.
- Spatial Perception — Developed through combat with Todo, allowing Makoto to read and evade spatial shifts, including Boogie Woogie swaps 30.
- Spatial Overlap — A risky technique used to defeat Todo during their Exchange Event match 34.
- Heavy gravity — A later Limitless evolution that creates a gravitational field capable of slightly interfering with Gojo’s Infinity 50.
Defensive Techniques
Makoto compensates for his poor physical durability through spatial defense and movement.
- Can redirect incoming force with Ushura Bullet, though residual impacts still injure him heavily 15 19.
- Momentarily recreates an Infinity-like defense without the Six Eyes by constructing absolute distance at impact 31.
- Learned Simple Domain from Todo, allowing him to neutralize Wild Buddha’s petrification sure-hit effect 39.
Soul-Flesh Separation
Following Ashiya Dōman’s attempted possession, Makoto gained knowledge of Soul-Flesh Separation 47 48.
- Can examine a person’s soul and diagnose the relationship between their body, soul, cursed energy, and restrictions 48.
- Uses it to offer Kokichi Muta treatment options for his Heavenly Restriction 48.
- Its acquisition is tied to the memories and techniques Makoto gained from Dōman 47.
Dismantle
Makoto imitated Sukuna’s Dismantle through Echo Mimicry while fighting Ashiya Dōman in the soul domain 44.
- Destroyed Dōman’s soul and shattered Withered Glory Nirvana Realm 44.
- Required Makoto to endure severe backlash from mimicking Malevolent Shrine 44.
- Left him with more than half his bones shattered and caused a ninety-nine-day coma despite Yuta’s healing 45.
Artistic and Analytical Skill
Makoto is a skilled illustrator and an unusually perceptive profiler.
- Created the Gojo Mai gender-swap series, beginning with Saintess Arc 1.
- Uses artistic observation to notice personality traits, emotional vulnerabilities, and combat habits 17 18 20.
- Writes sensational articles and manuscripts to manipulate Jujutsu Society’s perception and feed his Limitless 3 4 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tablet and art supplies — Used to create illustrations, manga drafts, and rumor-based material 1 5.
- Monocle — A habitual accessory used during analysis and artistic work 5 17.
- Slaughter Demon — Cursed tool used alongside a copied Ratio Technique against Wild Buddha 38.
- Playful Cloud — Received from Gojo after the battle with Geto, but gave it to Maki because he was physically incompatible with it 13.
Relationships
- Gojo Satoru — Teacher. Their relationship is defined by teasing, harsh physical training, mutual shamelessness, and Gojo’s genuine concern for Makoto’s survival and growth 1 5 15 50.
- Shoko Ieiri — Teacher and reluctant collaborator. She helps Makoto use rumors against Geto and provides his recommendation to Kyoto 3 17.
- Okkotsu Yuta — Friend and fellow Tokyo student. Makoto protects Yuta during Geto’s attack, partners with him during the Exchange Event, and is later healed by Yuta 7 28 45.
- Zenin Maki — Friend, rival, and frequent target of Makoto’s teasing. He gives her Playful Cloud, while she guards him during his ninety-nine-day coma 13 45 46.
- Todo Aoi — Closest Kyoto ally and self-proclaimed brother. Todo trains Makoto, fights him during the Exchange Event, and repeatedly protects him during the Wild Buddha and Dōman incidents 18 33 39 40.
- Zenin Mai — Initially hostile due to Makoto’s connection to Maki. Their relationship develops into mutual teasing, manipulation, and occasional cooperation 17 20 48.
- Miwa Kasumi — Kyoto friend who tends Makoto’s injuries and later seeks his help for Mechamaru 19 47 48.
- Mei Mei — Makoto’s admired “mature woman” and a financially demanding associate. She proctors his Grade 1 test and fights alongside Todo to save him from Dōman 1 35 40.
- Ashiya Dōman — Ancient sorcerer who attempts to possess Makoto through a cursed object implanted in Wild Buddha; Makoto destroys his soul with Dismantle 40 44.
